Look around anywhere, you'll see mushrooms growing. I live in your general area and we have majority of the mushrooms growing in lawns right now. I found some Amanitas and Agaricus today.
Are you just speaking about hallucinogenic mushrooms, or edibles or all mushrooms?
Living in the bay area, we have quite a selection of mushrooms to encounter.

Panaeolus foenisecii, a non-active "little brown shroom," is very common right now in lawns. Try shopping centers with lawns.
Angry, I always thought "Lala Land" was L.A.

Ehhkk.. I can't even look at that picture! Those things have been bugging me forever. They look like a subbalteatus, but, they are useless, and I have seen hundreds of them over the past week!

Even if I found something I could use, here in central fla. I doubt i could achieve a set & setting commensurate (?) with the occaision.
I am familiar with one species here, and do keep an eye open...But...I'm not 'Master' of my own domain, if you know what I mean...
One good-size cap and I can fuck for hours,,,and if that's as good as I can hope for, in my situation, then it's good enough for me,

Panaeolina foenisecii DOES contain small traces of psilocybin, but im assuming you'd have to eat a shitload of them to have any effect at all. Here is an excerpt from a book i use as a field guide called "hallucinogenic and poisonous mushroom" by gary p. menser:
"analysis shows this species to be latent and often containing psilocybin and psilocin. western analysis has often shown the presence of psilocybin (but not psilocin) in small amounts only."
thats my two cents.

Hi Tuna, They have been known as:
Panaeolina foenisecii is a very common, cosmopolitan species (see Fig. 1). Appearing scattered or gregarious on lawns, grassy areas, and in meadows, the mushrooms are frequently observed in the early morning, sometimes wilted or gone by midday. It often is seen in close proximity with other fungus (such as Marsmius oreades (Bolt.:Fr.) Fr., Coprinus spp., Psathyrella spp., and Conocybe spp.) adapted to similair environments (e.g., lawns and grasslands).
Over the past 75 years, P. foenisecii has been placed in various genera, including Psilocybe (Ricken 1915), Coprinus (Michael 1919) and Psathyrella (Smith 1972). Taxonomic reference to the genus and synonyms for the species include the following binomials listed according to their chronological taxonomic description.
Panaeolina R. Maire, Treb. Mus. Nat. Barcel. ser. Bot. 15:109 (1933). Type species: Agaricus foenisecii Pers.:Fr., Syst. Mycol. 1:295 (1821). Typonym: Psilocybe Fayod, Ann. Sci. Nat. (Bot.) 7(9):377 (1889). Panaeolina foenisecii (Pers.:Fr.) R. Maire (Haymakers).
Agaricus foenisecii Pers.:Fr., Syst. Mycol. 1:295 (1821). Psilocybe foenisecii (Pers.:Fr.) Quelet, Champ. Jura. Vosges 1:47 (1872). Drosophila foenisecii (Pers.:Fr.) Quelet, Enchiridion:117 (1886). Psathyra foenisecii (Pers.:Fr.) Bert, Bull. Soc. Mycol. Fr. 17:227 (1901). Panaeolus foenisecii (Pers.:Fr.) Kuhner. Botaniste 17:187 (1926). Panaeolina foenisecii (Pers.:Fr.) R. Maire, Treb. Mus. Cienc. Nat. Barcel. ser. Bot. 15:109 (1933). Psathyrella foenisecii (Pers.:Fr.) A. H. Smith, Mem. NY Bot. Gdn. 24:32 (1972).

No Roofus, Again, as I noted in the post on Northern California n liberty caps. Gary Menser, who is unforntunately dead never correct errors in his guide which were taken from errors in everyone elses guides of the late 1970s and early 1980s.
The shroom is not active at all and the two specimens analysed were most like the result of mixed collections of shrooms with Panaeolus subbalteatus inthem.
Read this paper fromthe yearbook of Ethnomedicine and the Study of Consciousmness if you want to learn about panaeolina foenisecii.
It is right here at the shroomery at:
http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/12179
It is not a psychoactie species, and please read my comments about Gary mensers book in the post oin :Liberty caps in Northern California where you also quote ferom Gary's book.

Yes it is too bad they arent active.. id have had multiple trips right now if they were. So far ive been on 4 hunts in the past month and all have turned up a coprinus strain and those haymakers (foenesicii)
Thanks john for clearing me up on that one. So basically subbs are really the only actives that grow in northern cali then? I may just start hunting for these, the past 3 weeks ive been trying to find libs in my area, and i wasn't gonna give up. Glad you told me so i stop wasting my time looking in this area. Im thinking of taking a trip up north past san fransisco next weekend. Any ideas of where i should look for subbs john? thanks

Subbs aren't the only actives in northern CA. Ps. Cyanescens, a very potent wood-lover, grows in the colder months around here. Check wood-mulch piles (like in community gardens) or in mulched flower beds. Not cedar mulch, though. And be careful to make sure it's really ps. cyan, because deadly Galerinas look a lot like it.

Psillygirl, again i bring to mention that the woodchipped P. cyanes are probably gone for the year due to the three day freeze here in the Seattle area. The P. cyans I found today when I was not looking were in grass and away from any area where there was any mulch. The grass shrooms can grow all year long in Seattle, especially blue ringers if there are automatic sprinkler systems and a good perpetual lawn care service provider at new apratments and condos and restaurants or large areas with new sod. However the woodchip varieties are done for the season. there may be a rare fruing or two for the wood chip species but i they will be far and few. Still I wish you good luck in your venture. And Roofus, P. cyanescens and p. cyanofibrilosa have been collected as far south as San Francisco up through Eureka/Arcada from December into early January, around nice homes with mulched gardens sometimes in Parks and around landscapped areas in public places. SDomeone recently posted some images of P. cyanofibrilosa he collected near San Fran. mj mj mj

hrmmm I got a few decent sized fruits and saw some good pinnage going on in multiple woodchip cyan patches this afternoon. Some spots that hadn't fruited before it got cold are pinning nicely, I don't think the freeze hurt things too much... Definitely get out and do some hunting around here this week pg . DH
