Re: what is psilocXX function in the mushroom? [Re: ask]

I think Micro's really got a point, though the effect psiloc** has on us may be pure chance, as Papaver pointed out. I do know one thing- people who are tripping are easier for the cops to catch, and if mushrooms affect other mammals like they affect us, that would make them very easy prey for predators. My point is that a 'poison' that makes a creature much more likely to die at the hands (ok, claws) of a predator is just as signifigant in terms of natrual selection as a poison that kills outright. I'm going with a 'modified Micro' theory, if you will.

As to Pavaver's theory, I believe that many compounds produced by critters may not currently serve any identifable purpose, but may have once done so, may be a precursor or byproduct of some process that does so. It may also serve an important function that we have no idea about at all. Note that these comments are generalized and do not all nec. apply to psiloc**. A more difficult to support idea is that by an organism having a set of complex metabolites that _could_ be toxic or deterent to a predator/grazer/pathogen give much more chemical diversity for evolution to work with, whereby mutations could give rise to a new class of toxins, etc. That's why there's that doubt in my mind that it could all be just chance. And chance is a beautiful thing...
