Another mushroom death hits the news
    #2108594 - 11/15/03 07:39 AM (13 years, 22 days ago)

Around 7:30 last Saturday night, Billy Nigh raced his family's car out of the driveway at 32nd Street and Grandview Street. He rocketed down Grandview, until he slammed into a tree at 19th Street.

His parents want you to know why.

Mark and Mary Nigh want every kid they can reach to understand what turned a good Saturday into the last day of their good boy's life.

The day had begun with football. Mark coached a youth team. Mary pitched in with concessions. Billy, 17, and Jimmy, 16, the oldest of their four sons, helped on the field. Both boys were students at Curtis High School. After the game, Billy and Jimmy went off with two friends.

"I want Jimmy to explain what happened next," Mark said.

Sitting between his mom and dad, Jimmy did.

"We were all going to eat 'shrooms that day," he said.

They had two types of hallucinogenic mushrooms - an African variety and local "blue ringers."

"They grow in people's yards," Jimmy said. "One boy was growing them in his closet. He told his mom it was a science project. After Billy, he threw all that crap away."

The boys ate their mushrooms and went to a playground.

"We were playing on the Big Toy, having a great time," Jimmy said.

Billy was not. He was off by himself, frightened.

"He told me he couldn't distinguish what was real from what wasn't," Jimmy said. "He started walking home. We stayed a bit."

Mary picked up the story at 7 p.m., when Billy got home.

"You could tell by looking at him that something was wrong," she said.

First, he said he had been drinking, then he told her about the mushrooms and hallucinating.

"I told him, 'Billy, we're going to get through this,'" Mary said. "I put on soft music, turned down the lights and checked on him every five minutes."

When it seemed he was asleep, she popped into the shower.

She got out and found him, dressed in his boxer shorts, grabbing the car keys off the mantle.

"He darted out to the car and locked himself in," she said. "I was out there, pounding on the car, yelling at him to open the door. He wasn't wearing a seat belt. I was pounding on the hood."

To keep Billy from leaving, she stood behind the Hyundai Elantra. Looking at his face in the rear-view mirror, she did not see her son in those eyes.

Billy, who did not have a driver's license, hit the gas. Mary jumped out of the way.

"He was going pedal to the metal down the street," she said. "All I could do was stand there and watch him accelerating."

Mary got Mark, who went looking for Billy. At 19th and Grandview, 13 blocks from home, he found police, but no aid cars.

"All they could tell me was there was a fatality," Mark said.

Frantic, he tried to get close. Police held him back while they traced the owner of the car and called a chaplain.

Later, Mark learned more.

"From leaving the house to the scene of the accident, they said he was doing 100-plus miles an hour. "He was thrown from the car. He was found in the back yard of a house at 18th and Grandview," Mark said. "That's what the truth is."

These good parents believe it is a miracle their Billy did not kill anyone else.

Now these brave and agonized parents want him to save the next child. They want kids to understand that if you experiment with drugs, you're the lab rat, not the scientist.

At their request, the priest at Billy's funeral Friday told the story to the friends who outnumbered St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church's 1,500 seats.

At their request, I'm telling it to you.

Tragic. Still, I wonder whatever happened to reporting with no bias? Obviously, this reporter was very emotionally touched by the parents loss.

Driving like an idiot at 100mph without a seatbelt killed Billy, not mushrooms. Simple logic.

Its not fair that people do this after a freak accident... I'm sure there is a person that has died each way there is to die. Billy died but how many thousands or more used shrooms w/ any problem at all? I think the ratio makes it clear that it is not like something bad will happen tripping, if something does then its a rare freak accident.

Alcohol facts US:

60 percent of all teen deaths in car accidents are alcohol-related

305 people die in alcohol related accidents each week. One life lost every 33 minutes

Eight young people a day die in alcohol-related crashes

The number of young people who died in a crash where the young driver (ages 15-20) was intoxicated is 35% of total traffic fatalities.

In single-vehicle fatal crashes occurring on weekend nights 57.7% of drivers under the age of 25 were intoxicated. A person with a blood alcohol content of over 0.15 is 380 times more likely to die in a single vehicle accident than a sober person.

what a fucking idiot. hey billy: i'm laughing at your ass right now for being so so stupid.

i knew when i read this story that some people were going to have that reaction. let's step back for a moment eh? people here get so defensive when this sort of thing happens... "aw... that stupid kid... making mushrooms look bad... spoiling all our fun..."

jeeze, the kid was stupid yes, but he was just a kid... he ate something he shouldn't have, which he couldn't handle, he made a bad decision under the influence of a powerful drug, and now he's dead. it's a tragedy. have a little compassion.

Now how many people die in crashes sober each day? Driving on the freeway to work, Ide say I see 1 every 2 weeks or so. So where are all these simpathetic stories? Why arent I being warned about the dangers of driving sober?

i have a feeling that if every single driver on the road was tripping, you'd see more than one crash every two weeks or so. driving while tripping is much more dangerous than driving sober.

There is a death on US roads every 12 minutes and there is a serious injury every 14 seconds.

I feel bad for his parents, but I agree. He was a moron, he deserved to die, and I'm glad he is dead...the world has one less stupid person now. Driving down the road 100mph sober is not a smart thing to do, I don't care how fucked up you are you should know better.

Some people just can't handle what hallucinogens do to them. Maybe he was having some other issues in his life that caused him to snap.
I knew a girl once that ate 2 grams and stole her dad's pistol and tore out in his car. Two days later, the police found her 2 states away asleep in the car on the side of the road with the pistol in her hand.
She was in a really bad position in life and did not need to be doing hallucinogen drugs.
