Hey guys, been a few weeks since i starting pulling together what i need; between my laziness and a busy few weeks it got held off but i think, finally, i can start this journey. Im going to list what i have, if someone can let me know if im missing anything though i will check after posting. At this point i'm trying to make an effort to get things down and not have to rely on reading the Tek after a try or two. Ill likely do this each step before i start it instead of blindly following a tek and not learning, i think i have the majority of it down in theory. Sat in front of me; (Wont necessary need all this as just doing a small practise run first around)
Few large jars with lids. 4 spore syringes Pressure cooker tub with lid; will be mentioned later. 2 bricks of coir Large bag of garden bird seed mix Polyfill Bag of gypsum bag of vermiculite Box with gloves and clear top for sterile conditions Bottle of isopropyl alcohol i had lying around to pre-clean tub~
I made the box, its small but only for a practise run - around 19-20cm around; roughly a dvd cases height on all sides. Using it as they where just laying around and thought it would be fun to grow a cube of cubes It will probably only be 1 or 2 jars in but i want a tub run with minimal risk and why not.. every extra gram makes a better sandwich
It has a tight lid that slides in and out, ill take the risk of not having handle locks here. I will be starting up a few jars in the morning and keep this thread updated. Tonight im doing to clean the jars, the box and an area to work in, put the bird seed in water ready to siphon out the floating ones in the morning. In the morning i'll disinfect the work box, drill my holes in the cube and move everything in and get to it.

Nice copy of Kingdom hearts. I will attempt to dissuade you from growing in that cube however. Unless you want to explain how they're going to get good fresh air in there, then by all means. You're growing bulk right?
Welcome btw.

If you are able to drill holes in that cube without cracking it, then you can give it a try. Make it like a small SGFC. Holes on all six sides.
Good luck

Thanks, i honestly didn't remember picking it up till i pulled it out for the comparison. Im going to drill all my holes in the morning and the lid slides on and off to air them a few times during the day Bulk used loosely, im just having a taste of growing overall so figure ill get a little practise in transferring from jar to something, might aswell make it a mini-mono.

Alright, well, that cube can work if you can get about 1.25 inch holes on the 4 horizontal sides and stuff them with polyfill during fruiting. 4 holes total should be fine, so just one each side.
Since it's a cube just pick which two opposing sides you want to have high holes, and which you want to have low holes, since it won't matter much either way.
That could potentially make a cool mini-mono, and I'm down with growing cubes in a cube for the inception of it all but, let's make it the best we can if that's the case.
I urge you to run any design ideas past here first to ensure that you have a fruiting chamber that you can still use well into the hobby.
Other than that, I'm optimistic about your plans here.

Ill keep things updated here, im optimistic too, maybe blissfully ignorant but thats why im not starting with 2 large monos Thanks again for the words and for the hole info; i was curious,. I was thinking 4 6-7mm holes but ill give 1.25in a try; i have 3 more of them i can play around with in the future.

Well the thing is, hole size doesn't really matter as long as it's big enough. You're stuffing it with polyfill and that means that your air flow is always adjustable. May as well have a big hole in case it comes down to it and you need to remove the poly completely to get a good steady rate of evaporation. I do this with my top holes every now and then in combination with some misting as a buffer for moisture loss.

Took me another week to actually get around to starting, tried finding a new PC as mine only held 3 jars. About a week in; did 3 jars for a test run. One is gone, cobweb mold, the other two are hopeful, assuming its mycelium not mold thus far as they haven't rapidly contaminated like the first but slowly growing out white patches. I tried getting a picture but didnt work to well, will try on a better camera later tonight.

Do we have contamination or mycelium ? Its a rhizomorphic species if it makes any difference this early. Its growing patchy all over the jar as the needle didn't quite reach when i made them up so i gave them a shake. The white on bottom right is just a bit of a sticker i didn't get off.

it looks like myc. best to not shake jars after spore inoculation, I think

It's a cube....any cube can be rhizomorphic, then go fluffy, then go back to rhizo, all depending on the nutrients in the given substrate....

Good to know; i knew vendors write up there ads to make sales but guessed certain stains would be more likely/sure to be and some not, hence it being mentioned in the description of only this of the 4 strains i brought.
Thanks guys

I assumed that's what he meant. Seeing rhizos doesn't mean you have a healthy cube culture, but it DOES mean you most likely have a cube culture, and for someone starting out, that's still a good sign.
