Getting Serious With Liquid Culture.
    #21082352 - 01/07/15 01:19 PM (9 years, 4 months ago)

Hello.  I am into liquid cultures, but have hit the roof as far as advancements and developments can be made by doing liquid cultures by hand.  I feel that you can just never be sure of the concentration of liquid mycelium at any given time.  That's why the only way I see to making LC's worth carrying on developing with was to get a Eberbach, a stir plate, and few stir bars.

Well, a good deal on an Eberbach Waring blender unit including 500ml glass blending container with lid was found, so after much forethought, the unit was purchased, and has arrived.

Been looking around for/at stir plates.  There are a lot of options out there.  Some say that they are not for continuous use.  Others say they have a "hot plate" option, which is basically a heating element under the stir plate that heats up the plate.  I am just not sure which type of stir plate(s) best suit the needs of this hobby, so I have refrained from getting one.

Was wondering if anybody knew what the best type/style of magnetic stirplate and stirbars that best suit the needs of this hobby were, and possibly where to get them??

Cool, man.  I didn't even see those there.  Looks like I have some studying to do.  Thanks.  I appreciate that!

Yeah, paid 200 + 16$ for shipping and handling for this thing, and it's in great condition.  It has barely been used.  Can't wait to begin messing with it here in the following weeks when spacial orientation in the lab allots for the changing of gears in how procedures are practiced in the lab.

Yessir, would like a stainless steel one.  In fact, stainless steel is my favorite color.  Let's get our trade, or something on.

Was thinking it would probably be best and start small with a used, cheaper rendition of a stirplate, and stirbar making the natural progression into buying the Cadillac of stirplates and stirbars from Stamet's website.  The  cheapest stirplates off of ebay I have found were 79$, and 9$ for some stirbars, but the stirbars don't have that addition like they do over at FungiPerfecti.  Plus I am just not entirely sure what to look for.

You could try making one, I hammered one out in an afternoon with an old pc fan and some rare earth magnets. Hot glue gun and a 12 volt supply.

I can understand why this idea may not appeal to you, but if you wanna cheap out until you're confident that you need one, DIY!

I whipped mine up for exactly the same reason, btw. If it turns out to be as awesome as I hope I'll probably invest in a proper one.

Thank you for the encouraging words.  Had a feeling that being glad a stirplate was purchased to further develop the liquid culturing techniques would not be in vain due to the fact that the Eberbach cherry was busted a couple of days ago, and expectations were far exceeded.

The concept of the building of a stirplate isn't an issue.  What would be more of a pressing issue would be finding the time to dedicate to the gathering of the materials, then the building of the stirplate(s) itself.  Not to mention the amount of research that would have to be applied into how to build something that no idea is had about how the device operates.  Also, there is no comprehensive "teks" on the Shroomery over how to build your own, DIY stirplate.

Got a few cheap stirplates in the cross-hairs from a member of the Shroomery who is actually in this thread.  A deal has been struck, then had an issue with the electrical in the residence that day that expanded into an over the weekend fiasco that required undivided attention, BUT that's over now.  Am still interested, and now READY to buy the stirplates, and that other thing said member wanted to sell with the plates as well.

Check out homebrewing forums, they make DIY stir plates out of cool shit like cigar boxes to make yeast starters with.
