First Grow!

First I want to say thank you to everyone on this site. I don't post much but I read a lot here and I am grateful for the amount of knowledge that is shared. I have never done any psychedelics before and have only greened out on marijuana (fun times ) I am interested in psychedelics for personal and spiritual growth and I have been fascinated by other people's journeys and I want to experience it for my self. Initially I started hunting for mushrooms but found that to be like looking for a needle in a hay stack.
I decided my only other option was to grow my own. I live in GA so getting spores isn't easy. It took about a month for me to receive a print (B+). From there I made the syringes and have inoculated 8 jars. It has been 10 days since inoculation and the waiting is painful! Here are some pics for now. I will use this thread to update and ask questions as I move along.

looking good! now keep patient and leave them alone until they're done
best way to keep from touching those jars is to make new ones!

Absolutely when the time comes I know this is silly, but I don't want to jinx myself by getting it ready yet. When my jars are fully colonized and consolidating I will prepare my SCFC.

Thanks space! I am completely obsessed! I was initially checking my jars with a flash light and magnifying glass

We've all been there! for your next batch try to get the brown rice flour ground up even finer. it looks a bit chunky, its supposed to be as fine as any other flour.

Will do! I was using my magic bullet to grind the brown rice and it started to smell like it was over heating so I cut it short. I will probably by the brf premade next time...

I used an electric coffee grinder when I made brf. I've only seen the magic bullet on tv but I'd think it should be able to grind the rice even finer.

They should have the rice flour in any health food store. Your jars are looking good though, how was the inoculation process?

It went well Rebelutions. I made a still air box. Sterilized my syringes and water and made them in the sab, made them a little dark though... I steam sterilized my jars for two hours in a boiling pot. I inoc. them in the sab and flame sterilized the needle between jars.

The thing with buying it in a health store is the outrageous price.
Just buy some generic brown rice at the store and grind it up. Easy.
Also nice using fresh ground BRF that you can just grind up as you need it..

Hey FWO! I did grind it myself, but my magic bullet's motor started smelling funky so I ended up keeping it a little course because I thought the motor would blow out.

All good, just give it a 5 min break and then go in for another pulse. No sense buying from the health food store or buying premade BRF. If you continue this hobby, I'd recommend getting a $15 coffee grinder. It will more then pay for itself when used for the following: Grinding drywall (gypsum), brown rice, grinding agar, vermiculite and other uses along the way. The magic bullet doesn't stand a chance for very long.
Jars look good. And, you even got the Azur "seal of approval".

Just an update. Things seem to be moving along well. I am hoping the jars will be at 100% colonized next weekend. I plan on making my sgfc next weekend to get it ready while they are hopefully at their beginning stages of consolidation. One upside to the waiting is that it gives me plenty of time to research the next steps.

Drilling the holes can take a long time. Especially if you measure out the holes every two inches. Took me like 3 hours at least with my 117 qt sgfc. Spread over a few days. Or if you accidentally break your tub while drilling... your jars look really good. I think they would have contaminated by now.

Sha-boing BOING! My jars are 100% colonized!

One of the jars has so much condensation some water is pooling at the bottom, I hope that is not a problem.
Honestly, I didn't think I would even get this far. When I received the spore print in the mail I was very overwhelmed by the process. The information you guys share here is priceless! Thank you
I will give my jars a week now to consolidate. I am going to homedepot today to get my supplies for my sgfc. Does the size of the tub vary at all to the amount of cakes you have? I only have 8.
Also, I will get some spring water for my 24 hour dunk next week and will aslo "bake" the verm for 30min at 350 before I roll my cakes.

Nice jars!
So now it's time to build your SGFC. Get a 66 quart tub with a clear lid and drill it to spec (this is key). Next, head over to the garden section and grab a big bag of perlite. With only 8 cakes in your FC, you don't want to skimp on the depth of perlite.
Scratch the spring water, it's not necessary. You can also forego baking your vermiculite. Your "sterile" work has come to an end for this project, so there is just no need. At this point it's up to the mycelium to hold its own out in the dirty world. Tap water works fine for dunking and misting.

Thanks FM! I just purchased the 66qt container, however I could only fine small bags of perlite. I got three 8qt bags but I am starting to think that wouldn't be enough.

A 66qt is a big ass container for a few cakes. Save that for your monotub. Get something smaller. You don't want the cakes right on top of each other but if they're close in proximity they give off heat and help with the humidity.

Hey Gyo! I took a pic with the jars to give you an idea with the spacing, do you still think it is too big? Do you think 24qts of perlite is enough? Thanks!

The cakes are smaller then the jars so yeah I still think it's a bit too big since we use 66 qts for monos. If you look into your colonized jars you'll see the cake shrunk and is no longer the full size of the jar. I have 4 in a less then 20qt bin. A user named Munchauzen uses 66 qt SGFCs and does 36 cakes in there.
When you birth them and put them on foil you'll see what I mean,

A nice fresh bit and high speed will make nice clean holes. No need to press to hard which will cause cracking. Those holes look fine, can be easily cleaned up with a razor blade

If you heat up the plastic tub a bit before you drill, it will decrease the chance of cracking.

I just realized I placed my cakes bottom up. The part that had the dry verm layer is resting on the foil. Should I flip them or leave it? Thanks!
Never mind, I searched about it and it appears it should be fine.

Doesn't matter, the cakes don't have a right-side up.
What's important is if you see bottom pinning, don't flip the cakes because this could cause them to abort. The reason they're pinning down there is because they've found the best climate and flipping them could cause the best to become the worst, causing aborts.

Do my cakes look healthy? I think I loved them to death at the beginning and was over misting them. I have held back a lot on the misting the last couple of days to let the dry up a little and I have been fanning about 5 x a day. So, what do you guys think... Thanks!

Yeah but it's fine since you used the right size, Those cakes look pretty healthy. Mist your walls and make sure it dries up in about 6 hours, if not it needs better placement but you're looking great bud,
Expect to wake up to pins within the next week but don't freak out if it takes 14 days.

It's about 10 days in the fc and I am seeing some progress. I only fan and mist about once per day because the chamber seems to hold a lot of moisture. I see some pins and for some reason I thought when the pins start the growth would explode, but they are just creeping along. Here are some pics

spray and fan once a day? That's pretty damn light. Unless you are soaking them when you spray...what do you mean by "hold a lot of moisture"?(walls or cakes?) you should be going by the droplets on the cakes. when there are no more left you want to spray and fan again. Maybe you have a super humid room, but I like to spray and fan at least 3 times in the 12 hours the light is on.

Weirdest part about it is his cakes are showing no bruising so I let the comment slide .
I'd up that to at least two though, once when you wake up and again when you go to sleep but if it's working and pinning what can we say .
Mist your cakes and come back eight hours later and touch them. If they're dry mist again. Then don't worry about it. I only ever misted two times a day but that's 'cause I'm busy (On the shroomery )

Initially when I was fanning and misting 3-4x a day the verm stayed wet. I felt like I was slowing things down because the cakes stayed too wet. Now, with just fanning and misting once a day the verm still stays moist and the wall closest to the window (as you can see in the pic)is always wet. The perlite also feels damp.

Everyone's living conditions are different so trust yourself before us. Some people can get away with that in the right places.
Pastywhyte lives in a fucking desert and his RH in his house is low as fuck. He'd probably have to mist 3-4 times a day to get an SGFC to work.

Lol! Honestly, it is pretty cold here right now and the heat in on a lot. I am not sure how they are staying so moist, but I will follow their lead...

HER cakes*, But right on about no bruising. If you see some blue you know its way too dry. Listen to GYO he knows whats up.
My room humidity is about 30-40% all the time so I know mine dries out fast and 3 times a day is almost necessary. My big tell if they want a spray, is looking for little droplets on the surface. If im home and I see none ill give a spray. Some days I am gone and I can only hit them up twice and that's never been a problem. I just think once the exterior becomes dry some of the inner water wont go to the fruits, but will be transported to the outer mycelium to keep from drying. And the blueing and bruising (which you don't have) is a sign of the myc starting to really dry and starting to die. It looks like you are taking care of them just fine (cutting back when they seemed too wet). you'll be a pro in no time.

I've got fruits!!!
I just took all the mushrooms off the cake that had the largest mushroom and they are in the dehydrator right now. I have a few questions. Should I dunk the cake now for the second flush or can it wait for some other cakes to fruit and then I can do them all together? Do I dunk again for 24 hours? Also, why do some of the mushrooms have holes in their head? Thanks!

Did they grow really fast? 2-3 days?
Dunk for 24 hrs after you've picked all the mature fruits. The cake will feel spent. Don't leave it like that in your SGFC because it's weak after the first flush and more prone to contamination. Leaving it in there could lead to that contam.

taGyo, you're the man, thanks!
Um, they seemed to have grown slowly and then had a really quick growth spurt. I just submerged the cake in water and left all the verm on it. Tomorrow, I will rinse it, not add any more verm and put it back in the chamber.

Splitting, which is what you have can be genetic, from rapid growth, or from being too wet. No need to be concerned.

Quick question, should I elevate this cake? These two mushrooms are growing into each other and skidding along the perlite. My light source is the window. Thanks!

The caps look wavy and wrinkly. That's a good sign that they are getting water logged and/or not getting a enough FAE in a high humidity environment. Same thing with the splitting like I mentioned earlier..

That sucks. I have been misting and fanning a little more because my cakes seem dryer. I'll slow down. Maybe I should elevate it with a plastic jar lid... I am not sure how to increase my FAE being that everything is to spec

I am hoping for a second flush, but I have already tossed two of my cakes due to contamination. I tried to save this one by cutting out the green mold, but now I see white fuzz where I cut off the mold. Is this just myc or should I toss it? Thanks!

I'd maybe put it in a tupperware with the lid loose with maybe an inch of perlite under it but get it away from your other cakes 'prefferably in another room' and see what hapens.
