bitter tasting hedgehog?
    #21079458 - 01/06/15 08:14 PM (9 years, 4 months ago)

Hey guys, so I've been finding tons of hedgehogs lately and today I ate one that tasted a little bitter.
I've been trying to find info on look alikes, but I cant find anything helpful. I did read that they can vary in taste depending on where they were picked though.
so im just wondering if any of you guys know of poisonous hedgehog look alikes, or anything like that.

What species does 'hedgehog' refer to? You didn't do anything wrong but it's a new one to me :bigjoint:

sorry I shouldn't have used common names. I've been picking and consuming Hydnum repandum, and Hydnum umbilicatum for about 2 days now. today I just ate one that tasted a little bitter (I believe it was one of the H. umbilicatum.)
so like i said before, I'm wondering if there are any look alikes for these mushrooms.

The obvious guess is that you got one of the bitter Sarcodon species.

Sarcodon and Hydnum can be told apart by spore print color. Hydnums are white and Sarcodons are brown.

yea I guess that seems likely. I definitely wouldn't pick a brown mushroom while looking for hedgehogs though.
do you know of any tan/orange mushrooms with teeth besides hedgehogs?

ToxicMan was referring to spore color, not the color of the mushroom. Some Sarcodon species have similar colors to hedgehogs.

so then the teeth, of at least the mature specimens, would be brown?

Not really. Sometimes you can tell a mushroom's spore color by looking at the spore producing surface, but taking a spore print is the only way to really tell. The Sarcodon species I've found have not had brown teeth.

sometimes when i find more mature, larger hydnum repandum specimens they can have a slight bitter taste to them.

i dont remember that being the case with hydnum umbilicatum though.

so do you know any good ways to tell sarcodon and hydnum apart besides the spore color or taste?
