Authors: Rafati, H, Riahi, H, Mohammadi, A Source: INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF MEDICINAL MUSHROOMS; 2009, 11 4, p419-p426, 8p. Title: Enhancement of Indole Alkaloids Produced by Psilocybe cubensis (Earle) Singer (Agaricomycetideae) in Controlled Harvesting Light Conditions
Abstract: Indole alkaloids of Psilocybe cubensis have been reported to be the potential candidates for drug discovery in central nervous system (CNS) disorders. In this research, the effect of the harvesting light on increasing the active alkaloids of P. cubensis was investigated. Three different lighting conditions, that is, dim daylight, indirect daylight, and darkness were used to harvest the mushrooms. A simple one-step extraction method involving the homogenization of the dried fruit bodies of fungi in chloroform was used. The psilocin content of the mushrooms was analyzed by derivatization with N-methyl-N-(trimethylsilyl) trifluoroacetamide (MSTFA), followed by the GC-MS technique. This investigation showed that the psilocin content of the mushrooms was highly dependent on the lighting conditions. Variations could amount to 100-fold increases in the samples harvested in the dark condition, compared to the samples harvested in the light conditions. Therefore, preventing natural light in the harvesting chamber could be considered to have a considerable effect on the content of the psychotropic component of P. cubensis and, hence, the psycho activity of the mushroom.
------------- Unfortunately I can't get the full article atm, plus posting it would break some copywrong law i'm sure.. But this was a surprising find for me. I wouldn't be surprised to find a lot of holes in their methods though.

You can most certainly post the link to a scientific article here.

Those 'texts' never say if they used Multispore or monocultures. They probably used MS and they say wow low light.

I'm guessing they have very little knowledge of mycology. I'm learning now that this was already posted about. Also here's the article in full.

I posted about this once myself. Found the study isn't reliable. But that doesnt necessarily mean that light has no detrimental effect on alkaloids, it's more likely that it does.

That's really interesting, I'd love to read the entire article to see what all the parameters for there experiment were. Very curious about all the grow conditions. When they say harvest are they really meaning only the harvest took place in different lighting conditions? Because that's how it's written. Or are they experimenting with different lighting throughout the fruiting process?

It's almost like they just did an MS grow and scientifically documented the results in different lighting conditions. The cultivation section of the article is the smallest paragraph I've ever seen in any academic/science journal. It's mind blowing that these guys got paid for it. I guess they also found that the ones grown in the dark were uglier or more deformed, just stronger too i guess. To most this obviously isn't worth the difference when factoring in genetics, cultivation methods, and fruiting conditions. They unfortunately left a huge blind spot.

they had a bunch of different samples in different fruiting conditions. it says they harvested after 3-4 weeks after they put into fruiting conditions so that also worries me.
