Toccoa Falls
    #2106913 - 11/14/03 05:39 PM (13 years, 29 days ago)

Visited my niece last month at Toccoa Falls College, a Christian missionary school in Georgia. The famous natural landmark there is the 186 foot tall waterfalls a short walk from the campus. Some 16 years ago, the damn above the falls broke and in the ensuing flood of water, some 23 members of the faculty perished and several buildings were destroyed.

A plaque at the base of the falls details the tragedy and also tells how God's will and love, through donated money and manpower, helped to rebuild the stricken college.

"Nice spin," I thought. Why destroy buildings and people in the first place? Maybe God was telling them to get "real" careers besides that of destroying cultures and hounding other people in third-world countries.

Can you imagine if the college had been sponsored by the Church of Satan and the flood had occurred? The nearby (non-judgemental) Christian churches would have been saying it was God's way of shutting down the evil place and sending a clear message.

That is a pretty sterotypical view. Someone hands you a very bad situation that they have chosen to see the light in and you insult them by prejudging.

Im so tired of you people who claim such enlightenment to know the actions of others in any given situation.

For the most part, stereotypes exist for a reason. Of course, there will always be an exception or two to the rule.
I think Swami made a most excellent point. My parents attempted to raise me as a Christian, because their parents did. This being the case, I was forced into going to church for most of my childhood. I have witnessed the ugliness of christianity firsthand, from hypocritical, overbearing, judgemental, fire-and-brimstone, self-righteous grandma, to every other religion is wrong and we are the only way to heaven. I despised every bit of it.
Now, I'm not saying there isn't any good in christianity, because I have met my share of open-minded, loving, non-judgemental christians in my time, but they are certainly not the majority.
Most tell me how my beliefs are not in alignment with the church, and I am going to burn in hell forever, because God loves us all, but he only loves christians, and every other sort of backwards-ass, contradictory crap.

Judging from past experience, what Swami said sounds EXACTLY like something they would say. The Church of Satan exists as a polar opposite to Christianity. They hate christians and christians hate them. Tell me it isn't true.

All I'm saying is, that yeah, maybe they did choose to see the light in their own bad situation..great..good for them. Maybe if they started showing a little more compassion to non-christians, like they preach, and started judging a little less, and started doing the things they claim they are all about, they would get less flack from people.

Most Christians I know personally would see the light in any bad situation presented to them. "Oh, it's God's will, he is showing me the way", etc.. But when it happens to someone else, "God is punishing you for being a sinner", etc, etc ad nauseum. It's dogma to the nth degree.

Not to bash christianity or anything  It has it's positive qualities. I just choose to look at the negative ones.

That is a pretty sterotypical view. Someone hands you a very bad situation that they have chosen to see the light in and you insult them by prejudging.

The precedent is in the Bible, PK. It is called Sodom & Gomorrah. These cities befell a horrible fate and the tragedy was blamed on the sins of the citizenry. (Some scientists/archaeologists today believe the calamity might have had to do with underground methane or natural gas deposits blowing up.)

So let me ask you, how does one decide which tragedy is "deserved" and which is happenstance? THAT is my point. Does that make sense to you?

Rarer than the arrival of the 12th planet; shroomism and swami are in total agreement. Does this event signify the end of the world?

"Someone hands you a very bad situation that they have chosen to see the light in and you insult them by prejudging."

He was saying this because the strong Christian organizations in the United States are known for making such claims.

9/11 happened because the United States is a haven for sodomites and sinners, don't you know?
