Fuck bed bugs. Avoid those bastards best you can.

At my last apartment, they had a washer/dryer room that was complete shit, half the machines barely worked. I stopped using em pretty quickly, but my roommate kept going there for laundry. There was one time he brought back his sheets and blankets from the dryer and they were still cold and soaked, so he just hung them around the apartment to air dry them. About a week later we started getting mysterious hives looking bug bites. Neither of us knew what it was or could figure out what was causing them until he tore the sheets off his bed and saw the nest. I almost gagged when I caught a glimpse. Shit was so fucked. We found them everywhere when we caught on! Luckily his bed and the couch in the living room were the only things we needed to toss. Everything else got thrown in plastic bags and sealed for weeks while I sprayed for them every couple of days.

It was a long and draining battle with those fuckers that damn near drove me insane, but we were victorious.

Like others have said, you make much more than most people do when they move out. $15/hr before taxes? It would be hard to raise a kid and support an unworking mother, but you should be very comfortable. Especially if you already know some basics on how to cook (get a spice rack). I would start looking at cars and furniture if you have the room to store it.

The cost to move out can vary, but I need to make about $600 to sustain living on a month to month basis. I'd try to have 3 months worth of payments set aside before jumping into it, just to be safe.

Based on the OP, I'd say you'll be ready.

You definitely can get a good used car for that money.

The car I'm driving now, I spent $1600 on 2.5 years ago. It's still running strong, all I've paid for since are 2 new tires and a battery. I also tinted the windows and put a new sound system in, which was about $1500, which I didn't need to do at all.

I got a '96 geo prizm, which is the exact same car as a toyota corolla, just marketed under geo so they cost less. It's not very stylish, but for $1600, it was an excellent investment since I drive it every day to get to work and it gets 35+ miles to the gallon.

If I were you, I'd get something reliable (toyota, honda, subaru...). If you don't know much about vehicles, take someone with you who does. Reliability should be your major concern when buying your first car on a limited income.

My brother is a car mechanic. He'll definitely help me a get the best car I can get for the best price I can get. He knows a lot about cars and what to look for and what's good and what's bad, etc. Plus, he'll be able to help me estimate my costs for a car, the insurance, repairs if I need any, etc. So I think I'm good there when I wanna go there. I really don't care about getting a Ferrari or some shit like that lol I'm not picky. As long as it's not ugly as fuck and it works, I'll take it.

The thing is, I don't know if it's a smart idea to get a car at the same time that I move out. I'll need a car for work, otherwise I'll have to take the bus, but I don't want to blow all my money at once. I want to move out and still have money in the bank. I feel like if I move out AND get a used car, I'll be able to get them both, but by the end of it I'll have no money and I'll be scraping by with only a few hundred dollars for rent and groceries. I would like to have about $1000 or $2000 of cushion money, just to feel safe.

It's not even just moving out and being by myself, it's also about living with her, that's a huge bonus with this deal.

Also, it's not an apartment or anything, it's more like a townhouse. We have our own front and back yard (both decent sized) and a driveway!

My battle lasted 6 months before we had to just move out so they could let the apartment sit untouched. Had like 6 bug bombings with exterminators and stuff.

When we moved, our lease was fortunately terminated early with no fees (since it couldn't be contained). We just tossed everything and bought new stuff. Not worth another infestation.

We found them in clothes and sheets, but killed them by sealing everything in trash bags and letting them sit out in the summer sun. Apparently it takes a good heating to kill off the adults and eggs, which a dryer usually handles just fine. If not, the eggs or bugs can sit, closed up in the bag, for about a year without dying out completely!

We've since moved into an apartment that has wood floors everywhere but the bedrooms.

Perfect, you cannot complain there, and as an added bonus you won't be spending money on property taxes or repairs, that's all at the responsibility of the owner

Basically you have nothing to worry about if id say. I mean a minumum of $6500? I wish someone would hand me that kind of money to move i had to pay rent the day i graduated high school just to stay at home. :/ its taking me 8+ months to save for a car and an apartment. A decent 1 bedroom in my area cost about $1000- $1200 a month with utilities  i only make about $1200 a month so consider yourself lucky man.

Here too. Actually if you found a one bedroom here that wasn't in a basement for 1000 you
would be doing well.

That's how rent is in my area as well. I wasn't going to pay for that so I bought a house. It's only 1200 a month mortgage for an 1800sf 3/2

I think you're financially set dude, that's a decent amount of money to buy furniture and pay some rent off. For furniture and stuff, check out some thrift stores - The Arc, Salvation Army are cheaper, good will can be pricey for furniture ime. I'm talking coffee tables, bookcases, TV stands, desk - that kind of stuff.

Are you going to be on a legal lease with this or no? If you are, I'd (personally) just take a lot of the money you have leftover from the move in and pay off rent as far in advanced as you can manage. This helps me with my bills personally - if I have enough money to pay off three or so months of rent I just do so so it's less of a financial strain later. But really, just be smart about how you manage your money and you'll be solid.

No shit I wish I had about 10 grand to sink into an apartment. Instead of all this ghetto shit I got for free off craigslist

I'll be moving in with one of my girl friends. She's the manager of the house (whatever that means lol) and she said she would charge me $500 per month for rent, which I think is very fair. Other than that I don't have much more information. I don't know if it'll be furnished when I move in, I don't know what other extra monthly costs I'll have to pay, I don't know how much extra I'll need for groceries per month, etc. ...

So, will I have enough by April/May to move out and maintain? And will I be able to sustain it with my income.

6500 is way more than enough to move and sustain yourself for a while.. and with your income you should be ok...
as others have said that's enough to buy a used car in good shape as well and still have enough money to move.

You will want to figure out whether utilities are included in the cost of rent (which that would be an amazing deal if so),
or if utilities are not included, how much extra they will be. If you are sharing a house with a couple other people, it shouldn't be too bad. It can vary greatly depending on where you live, running A/C or heat all the time or not.. how many roommates sharing it etc.. but figure anywhere from about 50-150 a month or so.

Food is going to be your other main expense. That can vary GREATLY.. depending how frugal you shop.. whether you eat out all the time or not.. (Eating out a lot in general, costs a LOT more than buying groceries and cooking at home). If you are smart with food shopping and can budget well you can probably figure about 250-300 a month for food, give or take. But that also depends on where you live, food costs can be more or less in other places.

You will also need:
Car insurance if you have a car. Monthly cost of gas...
Do you have a cell phone? Figure that in.

Those would be your main expenses. Rent, utilities, food, car insurance, gas, cell phone.
Best to track your spending for a while and see how much you are actually spending on some of those things.

i would just advise that pay close attention to your spending until you get the hang of things. work with what you can in the mean time, even if you have to take the bus to work everyday.

It helps that things are furnished and you're not moving too far away(or I got that impression), When I was 19 I moved into a totally unfurnished row house in north philly with no ac or heat with three people I knew from highschool who were also students, no furniture other than a bed and boxspring which didn't even fit up the stairs into my room, and a bit of distance between places so I spent a lot of gas and driving back and forth at first....I feel like you'll be aight.

Every landlord I've had requires first month, last month, and security, so it'll probably be around 1500 to move in.

I asked my friend about more details on the house.

She said rent is $500 per month, which includes rent, hydro/water, electricity and internet. She said the only extra costs are house supplies such as cleaner, toilet paper/paper towel, etc., which me and her split on. The place is furnished so I don't even have to buy furniture, I can just bring some if I want, which friends/family will help me move. The place is only like 5 - 10 minutes from where I live now, so not much gas will be wasted bringing my shit over to the new house. So in the end, it's probably maximum $600 per month to live there.

I guess I'm lucky and I have the best deal of all time here lol.

Fuck yeah, 500 with utilities included is a pretty good deal. No security deposit?

You can definitely swing it. As well you can probably throw down 3k or so for a good reliable used car and still have plenty of money left in the bank after rent for a cushion.
You said your brother is a mechanic or something.. definitely enlist his help to help you track down and find the best deal. Make sure he comes with you when you check the car out to inspect and test drive.
