Death Row and Intelligent Rehabilated Inmates
    #21064940 - 01/04/15 08:59 AM (9 years, 4 months ago)

I love to listen to very smart people talk, whether it's about things like exastensionalism or metaphysics, and even religion and insanity sometimes. Regardless of what the person is talking about, it interests me a great deal if the speaker is genuinely invested in what they're talking about. I find that a person in prison has so much time to think about things, that once given the chance to speak in an interveiw, their thoughts and real personalities show.

I was watching a doocumentary on death row and inmates with life sentences, and there was a couple people that really interested me. It was sigificant because of the amount of time somebody spends in prison while on death row or while serving a life sentence, its ridiculous.

I am barely 18, and I still believe that I am at the beginning of what hopefully will develope into a happy and enjoyable life, where as one of these inmates was convicted at the age of 13, and sent to death row at 15. This inmate has been in prison for 35 years presently, still waiting for his death. That is something I cannot comprehend and make peace with. Imagine being confined to a box 23 hours a day, alone with your thoughts for 35 years knowing you could die whenever the state decides its time, doesn't seem fun to me.

The reason that this sparked my interest was because of the amount of mental change that must occur while on death row, especially being a 13 year old kid, having not experienced anything close to a normal life yet. That decision that he made at 13 will stay with him forever essentially, and he will die for that decision he made. Now, heres something I didn't expect. You would think that somebody like that would be full of regret and anger, but instead he seemed as if he enjoyed life more than the average person who's not in prison, he appreciated it for what it really was and he had accepted that this was his life; which allowed him to learn. It was very clear that he was abnormally intelligent. Which seems extraordinary to me, because he never had anybody to learn from, nobody taught him anything. He read lots of books over the years, and eventually developed a level of intelligence that forced him to cope with the abnormal circumstances involved with living on death row.

My question is that if somebody is convicted at age 13; an age where decisions don't appear to be important and life changing, do you think they should have to serve a life sentence or even death row ? At such a vulnerable age, it seems as if it would be extremely easy to influence the kid enough that he would change. After 35 years, he's not the same kid, his whole life was spent dwelling on what he did.

Do you think after 35 years, somebody who was convincted at such a young age, should have a chance to be realeased on parole and make an attempt at being a genuine contribution to society ? Or do you think that the person would suffer because of the fact that living in prison appears like the only way they can live ?

Remember to consider the fact that he had developed an extraordinary amount mentally over the years, and he did not seem harmful at all. In fact, he seemed as if in the interveiw he was eager to teach the interveiwer or talk to him and other people about things like metaphysics, and other complicated philosophys.

I think that people shouldn't sit on death row that long.

Just fuck them already. Irdc if they're smart, happy, seem harmless, etc.

They didn't get put there because they sold drugs or even robbed a bank, they were put there for murder. The person you killed at 13 is still dead 35 years later. Try asking victims family if they think he should be released now. That is more important factor than the offender reading lots of books. You spend that much time locked up you are likely not going to adjust well to release anyway.
These guys are great at the "poor me" routine. Lots of people grew up poor with no dad or a substance abusing parent. Lots of people had nightmare childhoods and they didn't kill anyone. I only feel sorry for the person he killed, not the murderer. I have no problem giving up on him, it's actually preferable to taking a risk on him as far as I am concerned.

I believe they are given parole hearings and such.
So, maybe the initial question should focus on that...?

I'm sort of on the fence about capital punishment.
I think it should be legal and carried out swiftly in all states for truly heinous crimes.
Actually, I guess I'm not really on the fence that much...
The bolded sentence sums up my beliefs fairly well.

What do you consider to be a "heinous crime"?

I think that means different things to different people. Like say I believe people that are cruel/abuse animals deserve the death penalty but you might think that's totally okay...see what I'm saying?

I would say a 'heinous crime' would be multiple murders (2+) with torture and
/ or a sign the person simply enjoyed killing. If that makes any sense at all.
