small second flush?
    #2106236 - 11/14/03 02:18 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

A friend of a friend made two casings, each using a loaf pan and each containing one cake. One of the casings yeilded significantly more than the other. The casing that yeilded less seemed stagnant and didn't want to go for a second flush (maybe because she patch cased & incubated like you do with the casing initially?), and eventually showed a bit of contamination, so forget that one. The casing that fared well is now flushing again, but only a meager two mushrooms or so. Could this be because she patch-cased (didn't incubate this one) after the first flush? By patch-cased I mean she covered exposed mycelium, not just filled in holes that were left from picking mushrooms. Also, she probably yeilded about 1/8th (estimate - no scale) from the good casing, and she read that cakes usually yeild this much total... so did she just get it all at once? If so, why would this happen? Is the 1/8th yeild for cakes that aren't cased (& if so what is the yeild for cased cakes)?

IMO ,if you?re doing one cake casings why don?t you just dunk the cake then roll in verm afterwards. You know is less a hassle and the results are almost the same, if not even better.
Besides, if you patch after a flush you don?t need to patch all the casing, just the holes and you don?t need to put it in incubation conditions neither.

I?m sorry, I forgot to add: Did you mist well your casings? Water is very important.

cakes = dunk between flushes...
casing = mist between flushes... (a good mist)
exec. results...

She's misted her casings, though she didn't know that they were supposed ot be misted well after each flush. She only did one cake each because she only had 4 cakes in all and wanted to try 2 cakes vs. 2 casings... In the future I'm sure she'll be doing more. I realize that you're only supposed to patch where you pick, but she didn't when she did all that.

Yes - she knows that now, but she didn't before. But yes.

This will help you a lot:

http://www.nansnook.com/index2.htm , then go to "Archives", then "casings" and finally "water delivery to casings"
