Would you eat your own pet?

The apocalypse is upon us. Food is scarce. You and your humanoid family are starving with no source of possible food except the pet you own, being a dog, cat or whatever else.
Would you kill and eat your pet for a meanings of your own survival?
Me? Hell no, my pet (cat) is part of my family. I'd rather die along with my cat!

I don't have a dog of my own yet, but if I were in a dire enough situation with the rest of my family I would advocate that we eat the family dog. It would be a harrowing experience, however.

I don't have a dog anymore but I'm not hungry. You figure it out.

the only family pet I would be opposed to eating in that situation would be the dog. A well trained dog could help find food and provide protection in the apocalypse.

Well I've always wondered what dog tastes like.. So yeah, why not. If it was the apocalypse and I was starving, I'd eat a rat, not sure why I wouldn't eat a dog.
honestly, I'd eat another human being.. I've quite frankly always wondered what we taste like anyways.

We could slow roast an infant over a fire
The meat would be so tender and delicious

Right now I say I couldn't bring myself to do it. The longest interval of time I've gone without food is about 48 hours, however, and even then I was considering chomping a person should their extremities enter lunging range. I probably don't understand just how much extreme hunger could affect my thought process in a survival situation.
I still vote no. Pets are friends, not food.

Food may be scarce, but I can still shoot pigeons and squirrels to sustain me and my dogs. And people who try to eat my dogs, I'll eat the people instead.

I would only eat my pet if:
my pet was a cow or a pig AND I was starving to death and/or really really poor and had virtually no choice

i would not eat my cat
i do wonder, however, how likely she would be to eat me if i was to die and she was still alive. probably not likely, as she only eats voles (not mice or rats), but still something to think about

Dogs are carnivores and I think there is a reason people generally do not eat carnivores.

The caloric intake from eating one cat won't last as long as the guilt. Though, the cat would probably starve long before me, so...I dunno.

I don't know that the cat would. I feel like a good dog would starve with the owner, but a smart cat might tell everyone to fuck off and catch it's own prey.

Good point. Maybe I would learn a few lessons on rat trapping from my cat...
