Peyote newbie

So I've decided to take advantage of Canada's little known legal exemption of peyote. You'd think that there would be a sizeable market for it at head shops or something, but no. Looks like online is the only way to go.
From my research, it seems Avalon Magic Plants is my best bet as they pretty consistently get recommended and well-reviewed. But if anyone has any better suggestions, I'd love to hear them.
Anyways, I don't want to spend several years growing the thing before my first time (but if I like it, I'll definitely keep growing it). I want a plant that is ready to go from the time I get it. Now if I understand this correctly, only the top part of the cactus, the "button" is the part you consume, and that one should consume several at a time. Therefore, getting a cactus means a single button which would be a waste of time and money.
Then I saw this: http://www.avalonmagicplants.com/mescaline-cacti/peyote-cactus-huge-cluster.html
By having a cluster, does that mean more buttons? Or am I just downright confused by this whole thing? Are buttons just a huge waste of time to order and should I just find other ways to get the mescaline?

Welcome to the EG Harbard
We cannot suggest other vendors to you as vendor and source discussion is forbidden here.
When a button is harvested correctly, the remaining stump will soon push out new heads, often multiple heads which will grow back fairly swiftly (for peyote!)
There is conflicting info as to the potency of caespitosa (the multi headed variety) These are often produced by rooting buttons, so it may be that there is some good and some bad clone lines out there.
Peyote does bring more to an experience than just mescaline. If just mescaline is your goal, then the trichs are superior.
This paper from Shulgin ECSTASY ANALOGUES FOUND IN CACTI talks a bit about Lophophine, one of the other known active alkaloids.

As Mostly said the best and fast way to get mescaline are trichs (trichocereus family) Peyote's mescaline concentration is roughly tenfold the one of a trich but it grows way slower than those so if you deal with tricks you get bigger amounts in less time among the trichocereus family the three species that have reasonable amounts of mescaline and alkaloids are T.pachanoi , T.Peruvians and T.bridgesii The latter is also considered the most reliable one

Thanks for the responses so far. I admit mescaline is my ultimate goal and I have considered getting a trich pach, but at the same time I want to keep it legal (read: exploit loophole), and maybe growing the peyote plant could turn into a hobby of sorts. I also enjoy culture and spirituality, which peyote seems the most associated with in terms of mescaline plants. I don't want to mess around too much with grafting and extraction processes.
So if I've got this right, after you harvest one button from a cactus, then you wait a little while (a relative term I'm sure) for the next one to grow?
If I got the cluster plant and harvested all the buttons right off the bat, would it be somewhat of a gamble whether they have much effect at all?

You need to harvest approx 10 buttons (+/- 5) to trip off peyote, after growing it for years. When you harvest properly more buttons will grow back, that part is correct, but it takes years. Listen to everyone and buy yourself some bridgesii cuttings, to my knowledge they are legal everywhere in the world. They grow fast, and are tough to kill. Order several cuttings, that way you can consume as well as plant a couple, they are easy to root and after they grow you can harvest a portion and before you know it you have too much cacti/mescaline.
By all means also grow Peyote, fuck yeah, take advantage of being able to grow it legally, but while you get started with that, introduce yourself to the trichs at the same time, there is nothing less spiritual about them, there is no reason not to really. There is no reason to make it so complicated, you can trip next week, or in 10 years, you decide.
Def grow peyote though, for those of us who cannot.

Well,it actually doesn't take years for the buttons to grow back if properly harvested, well at least it never has for me. I had a nice specimen that I cut for a graft one time. I repoted the taproot, with enough crown left for rejuvenation, and within a month in the baking summer sun,and a lot of water,a pup busted out of the very center, and by the end of summer had already grown almost to the size it originally was,and you couldn't even tell it had ever been decapitated. It also developed a side pup that got pretty big before I traded it off like an idiot It was a regular old Williamsii too.

Good info, and that makes sense, it should go quicker since the root system is already established...my bad.
thanks

Just grow both. There's virtually no chance that you'll ever run into any legal problems for Trichocereus, plus it's a handy rootstock if you want to try grafting.

Hmm, I think I will give other cacti a try after all while I grow a peyote cactus. I guess I don't need the more expensive cluster one if it's going to take awhile anyway, and I can use the money I saved on a Pachanoi or bridgesii. Thanks for your help, guys.

Just for another quick recommendation, consider growing peyote from seed in addition to whatever adult plants you might buy. If you look around, a thousand seeds can be pretty affordable. The cool thing is you never know what kinds of weirdos might pop up.
