Water in bird seed substratE
    #2105203 - 11/14/03 08:51 AM (14 years, 1 month ago)

i am was making substrate with bird seeds and i have few questions:

1. i soaked them in water 24 hours. the recepie was to take 140ml seeds and 80ml water. do i soak them in the water with what they go into jar with or do i soake them in water, drain them and then add the amount of water needed

2. seeds have been soaking in water for 24 hours with the amount of water that was needed to make the substrate (140ml/80ml). they have soaked in it but there is still higher water lever that seeds. so sec question is that does it really have to be like this or am i doing something wrong. it looks like a soup, can i put that in the jars ???

thank you  (muahahahahaaa about to start up my first grow)

????????????????

You need to strain out the water -- you can't put it into the jars like that.

hmmm, but i read from some intsructions on this site to make the substrate like 140ml seeds and 80 ml of water. the seeds don't suck that much water in them so there is much water left over if i use the amount of water instructed.

I don't know. I just soak them for 24 hrs and then PC.

You obviously can't use a soup, unless you're trying liquid culture....

The person might have meant to mix the two in that ratio and then P.C. (to get rid of the soaking step) -- you'd need more water than the volume of seeds to soak them, of course, or you'll just have a puddle of water at the bottom. Where's the recipe?

"These recipes are designed to be prepared in an one step process:
fill the ingredients in the jar, close the jar with a lid using a filter disc or a polyfill filter, pressure cook for 1 hour, shake the jar after pressure cooking (while the jars are still warm). "

the one step mix suxx. different seed mix, different moisture content...

the soak is in my 0.02 the best option.. soak, drain as much as possible... let it drain for 10 minutes at least and shake any excess off.

load 1/2 way up if doing g2g or a bit more for injection.

pc away!

hey.. i added something to an ANNO reply!!.. wow.!

uhh, just finished PC-ing the seeds, smells like porridge in here, hope the glasses stayed ok heheh, but i will see soon

ONE MORE QUESTION , when i was making the syringe from a print the print was so attached to the foil that i had real trouble getting it from there to glass, used razorblade. are prints that are in that state still "alive" ??

no,he lost 2 jars to no germination at all and 1 with a putrid smell(wet rot i think)that was 1/2 colonised out of 12 half pint jars.
when he soaked them for the 5 minutes the water didn't change colour at all(wbs bought from a petshop)compared to the stuff thats prepackaged in supermarkets.

one point in soaking them was to let the germs become alive in water so they are killed more easy in PC
