I want to make music
    #2104834 -

I posted this in the science and Tech forum but i think i should have posted it here.

My friend and I like to record our jam sessions on a karaoke machine. Sometimes we will record drums, then play that back while recording guitar and the drum tape on another tape. that way the guitar and drums are on that tape, then we play that tape and add a bass line. I was playing around with the sound recorder that comes with window xp, but it is pretty limited in its abilities.

now that that is out of the way, i am wondering what software i could get that would do about the same thing as what we do with the karaoke machine? Something i/we could use to record a track at a time and then put them together on one track. Thanks alot.

Sonic Foundry makes a program called Acid (up to 4.0 now i believe) that is good for that if you're new to seqeuncing.  other popular software that can do that is Cubase, Cakewalk, Reason, Logic, FruityLoops.  you could also look into getting a digital (hard disk) or analog (tape) 4 track recorder.  of course obtaining the software is ultimately cheaper if you know what i mean

Cool Edit 2 is pretty good. It is what I just got done using to record some bass tracks. I have heard that Acid is suspossed to be capable of a lot more, but Cool Edit works fine too.
Peace.

Yea you might want to start with Acid 4.0 or fruity loops to start off with. I am using Digital Performer which is a professional sequencer DAW used by the pros (like Pro Tools). Of course I am really serious bout makin music but if you just wanna fuck around, you can get acid and those other software based programs for free. This is dealing with Midi which means digital recording (a whold different language). It sounds you are only workin with analog now so you might have to research a little more on sites and sources outside the shroomery. In the digital realm you can aquire all the benifits of analog recording with spending no money at all, but this will be all computer-software based (EQ's-Dynamic compressors Mixer control surface etc...). This is a good place to start: http://www.tweakheadz.com

I just got acid pro 4 laszt night, as i was reading through the manual it says that is isn't for those who are wanting to lay full tracks on top of one another. It says it is mostly for making looped music. and thanks for the info.

Try Cool Edit, man. It is all about recording full tracks. I am right now putting together a cover of IN FLAMES' Jotun, by me and my guitarist. He has one more harmony lead track to record, and I can organize it all up and make a final mix. Hell, I'll post it on here when it is done.
Peace.

Don't underestimate Acid 4.0. It is really easy to learn and record with. Its a good one to start out too and then if you think you might have something going you can move on to the more serious ones. There are even some bands that have switched over to Microsoft jsut so they can use Acid...(as opposed to Digital Perfromer which in only availabe on Mac). I can't think of many now but chemical brothers is one of these groups. I am not familair at all with Cool Edit but all DAW's are good...its your musical drive that makes the magic happen, not the program you record on.

N-Track is a nice recorder. Pretty cheap too.

Soundforge will do the job at recording. You can then mix your wavs together and have some respectable results if you use some plugins while mixing.

Just find a prog or 2 and experiment. There's so much to learn when you come to recording.

.fs.

If you ask me. Use abletonlive and reason. Two very very powerfull programs.

If I remember correctly I dont believe Reason or FruityLoops lets you record from an outside source. He's probably better off starting with Acid since I know thats an easy sequencer software.

No see, thats what Ableton Live is for. You can aslo rewire, ableton and reason so they run in sync. Its very amzing stuff.

I could of swore you said fruityloops or reason my mistake...but I agree with ya ableton would be a good choice. It might be a little advance for somebody whos never used sequencer software though.

Once you get serious, look into Ableton Live 6.0.
