I think that psychotropic substances exist for the same reason the teachings of the Buddha exists, for the same reason enlightening teachers exist, for the same reason hardship exists, for the same reason our minds weigh us down with guilt and selfishness, for the same reason that EVERYTHING exists.
Everything, just by existing and allowing us to partake in its experience, is helping us to evolve and grow. Every experience is another opportunity to learn about your Self and how it interacts with the undulating multi-dimensional fractal that is our Universe.

"Anybody know the name of that obscure usenet group where the mycology experts discuss things?
I read a thread there about the purpose of psychoactive substances in the fruiting bodies. Somehow the conclusion was that it wasn't for scaring away predators.
Can't find the thread (or the group) now though. "
i'd like to read that.

It may be that what I'm talking about isn't what is taught as mainstream Chaos Theory in mathematics. Much of it comes from my own tentative explorations in this area. Tell me, as I have never been "taught" a "real course" in chaos theory, would you say that chaos theory shows that order, of some abstracted form, is inherent in any disordered system (chaotic)? What do you think of chaos in quantum mechanics? Does it exist? At any rate, I don't think that math can be truly separated from what we consider "reality" or the Universe. This being the case, I see many far-reaching implications for chaos theory in the Universe.

According to chaos theory, there is order, there's just so many variables that it's impossible to predict.

alright... the question here is:
"Do you ever stop to wonder why these certain drugs exist in the first place?"
i really don't know. from what we know about biology and evolution we can understand that whatever its purpose, these chemicals must convey some sort of adaptive advantage to the mushrooms that contain them. i honestly don't know what that could be, except possibly to dissuade predators.
unfortunately, most of the more common theories (like the symbiosis idea) are essentially mythologies that don't hold up to any logical scrutiny, and i've yet to hear many rational attempts at an explanation. the message board someone spoke about a few posts up would probably shed some light.

It's also possible that it's simply a biproduct they generate, without any real purpose until we found one for it.

i'm not entirely familiar with the pathways through which the mushrooms create psiloc(yb)in... but i don't think it's a byproduct of another process... i'm pretty sure it's a process in itself. i'll see if i can dig that up somewhere.
if that's true, producing these tryptamines must be advantageous to the organism, or else it wouldn't expend energy making them (that would put it at a disadvantage).

How can you dare to rationalize this?
I exist.
We exist, I know you.
I have never met you.
Through another network we have shared the same space.

You know what the real mystery is? Why is it that there is food out there that we can convert to energy and use to move us around? Don't you think that's a little suspicious?
People always make it so much more mysterious that mushrooms exist, but it's not really. We share 60% of the same genetic material as bacteria. The effects of the mushroom says a lot more about the interconnectdness of life than the presence of a nature-deity trying to give us some kind of message or realization.
