Three strikes and you're out.

How does this three strikes law work? Say I get a letter in my mailbox that isn't mine, and I just throw it away. That's a federal offense right? Would that catch me life?
Is it any three felonies and you're a lifer?

First, just because something is a federal offense doesn't mean it's a felony.
Second, three-strikes laws vary from state to state, but I'm pretty sure that every state requires that at least one of the strikes be a violent felony.

Oh ok so I'd have to have a knife or something. Fair enough
Lets say I had a knife, is the judge able to use his "discretion" and over throw a three strike scenario if he chooses? Like apparently they can overthrow a mandatory minimum is certain cases?

As I said, that varies widely from state to state.

Don't know if this is accurate. I've sat next to more than a few locked up guys looking at 'habitual felon' status for only drug charges, or at least no violent felonies. This may be an argument of semantics, but seemed functionally like a three-strikes law, lots of them apparently looking at some 10-20 years for third time possession with intent felonies, and watching their bail jump from 25k to a half-million overnight when the magistrate hits them with habitual charges, not exactly "three strikes, you're out", but certainly "three strikes, fucking might as well be out". Maybe I'm missing a nuance here, but is that what you were referring to, or are the three-strike laws more specific?
