If someone had shot and killed me just because I had broken my leg earlier this year, I would be so pissed off. I have friends who have fallen off cliffs and broken vertebra, now back to their regular life, kickin' ass. So happy no one decided to kill us out of selfish laziness. :bored:

It's the shroomery:shrug:

I'm just checking the courage/compassion levels of the general population here.

Many people could care less about the suffering of other beings as long as they are not suffering themselves.  And few have the courage to make life and death decisions about anything it seems.

I've watched over and over and over pet owners who claim to totally love their pet refuse to have them put down to free them from imo, terrible suffering, because they themselves are so terrified of death.  If that's love then I'm the devil. :satansmoking:

You wouldn't be pissed off cause you'd be dead.

Plus I'm not really talking about tiny treatable injuries. Of course you'd want to access the situation before taking action.  On the battlefield some have had to kill comrades to prevent their suffering.

It saddens me that these warrior types have so much more compassion than many of the general public.

People keep pets alive for themselves.  Out of their own selfishness.

It doesn't help society shelters everyone from death being a natural part of life.  A hundred years ago people seen death.  They were better able to accept death.  Unlike today where its like "OMG I can't deal with it!"

There is one no-kill adoption center around here. We went in to adopt a new cat. Instantly I knew that the place was overcrowded, understaffed, and there were some cats that simply would never, ever, be adopted. Several of the kittens had eye infections. Many of the cats coats looked matted and unhealthy.

What am I getting at? Well their mission is of course to preserve the life of an animal who has never had any reason to die except for not having a home to go to. That's reasonable and even admirable. But the conditions of this no-kill adoption center are fucked up. They clearly have a problem with illness spreading due to lack of space. They clearly have some cats that behaviorally no one would want in their home. And they clearly don't have a staff that can manage the problems sufficiently.

In their effort to preserve life at any cost they are creating some serious suffering. I think humanity falls naturally into this same category. We're overcrowded in many locations and sick, sick, sick. There is poor management of this problem and incarceration is a shit solution to the behavioral problems that spring up. Yet here we are, desperate to preserve life anyways. Most adoption centers catch on pretty quick. But humans show no signs of ever catching on.

I don't know what I'd do in that situation but I do know that the current way of going about it is broke. Broke as fuck. And I'm part of it. I try not to add fuel to the fire but I'm not actively trying to change it either. I have the sight to see misery but I often don't have any workable solution to produce compassion. Or at least not the certainty required to act.

Am I fairly certain that the human approach to enduring suffering no matter what so long as life is protected is fucked? yah. But I am not certain in any answer to that problem. It may be unanswerable and that's the really scary part IMO.

Well the good news is you can answer the question for yourself and if you are truly prepared can end your suffering gently and lovingly if it ever becomes unbearable to you.  The rest of us must learn to fend for ourselves.

I spent two months giving a cat an IV several times a week because it had drank anti freeze. I ended up putting it down. The cat was fine as long as it got it's IV. It was hell getting the needle in though. I did it all for myself and cried like a baby when I buried it.

I accidentally ran over the family cat while backing the car out.

He was thrashing around and screaming. I reacted hastily with the only thought to end any suffering it might be experiencing. Grabbed the closest tool and without regards to it being perceived as brutal decapitated his head with a shovel.

That's the proper response imo.
