Advice on substrate jar assembly?
    #21042380 - 12/30/14 01:27 AM (9 years, 4 months ago)

I've already done my first batch using a 1/2 pint jars with the removable gasket, poking holes in the lids and using tin foil to seal the breach in a PC. I've found these other pieces online (not sure if I can link to other websites that aren't sponsors, did I read that somewhere?) and would like to assemble my own reusable lids that should work better.

Your incalculable expertise and advice is greatly welcomed. This is my first time ever cultivating mushrooms and I'm super excited for the process!

I want to use a lid like this:
http://www.shroomsupply.com/myco-jar-lids/mushroom-jar-lids/injectable-spawn-jar-lid-pp5-regular-mouth-70-mm

That's topped with a synthetic filter disc to allow airflow.
1. Is that reusable? Can I PC it without ruining it?
2. Its breathable, does that mean if I don't cover with foil, water can still get in it?
(Site desc. says "watertight seal", but does that stay true under PC conditions?)
3. Do I still cover it with foil when PC'ing?
4. The disc is supposed to keep contaminants out. Does this eliminate the need for the dry vermiculite layer on the top?

The rubber port itself can withstand dozens of injections before requiring replacement, and the discs can also be purchased individually.

Any ideas? Input on jar ideas? Thanks in advance!

i dont feel like typing that much but to keep it short those lids will last you forever. Dont need to be covered and those lids are made to be pc'd . Itd be cheeper just too make your own though with red rtv silocone and the lids they sell at walmart in the auto department and you can order tyvek evolopes from usps for free online.
