Lactarius rubidus?

I feel stupid…funny….
The past month i've gone out for a drive and hiked around looking for candy caps (my new favorite mushroom after trying some local beer brewed with them). Never found any.
Today I decided to take a closer look at the annoying orange mushrooms i've noticed all around my driveway. I've literally been walking over them to go hunt for them and come up empty handed….ignored them because they were growing around ornamental bamboo…not paying attention to the giant oak trees around my house that surely have root systems around.
Anyway…
Growing on and around oaks. Gills are subdecurrent…stipe hollow. White spore deposits on some. Once dried strong smell of maple syrup (same smell the bartender let me smell of some in a jar). So i'd pretty sure they are but….not all of them smell strongly of maple syrup. I want to make sure they are all candy caps, not all were under the same tree but look like the same mushroom to me..
Partially dried.

The only real look alike i've read to watch out for is Galerina, which seems bluntly different to me. Is there any others to watch out for or am I good to go?

They look right to me. The latex they bleed should be milky in color, like skim milk. It should not turn yellow after a short time. They don't always smell strongly - but as they dry the smell will get stronger.
About the only Lactarius you could confuse them with around here is Lactarius xanthogalactus. It has a bitter acrid flavor, latex that turns yellow over time, and tends to have a semi-zonate cap.

Thanks. None of them really smelled until I threw in the dehydrator. Some still don't smell. May toss me just to be safe this time and only eat strong smelling ones. Didn't check the milk on them or I wouldn't be as concerned.

There is also Lactarius rufulus, which is a deeper shade of red, is also edible and don't get a maple syrup odor.
All of the toxic lookalike Lactarius such as L. subviscidus and L. luculentus have opaque white latex, and I think the toxin leaves upon drying or cooking.

So this is a relatively safe one to mess around with as far as mushrooms go. Sounds like the latex color is the most important part. Gonna have To pay close attention to that now.

Yes, Lactarius are pretty safe.
When I pick them I snap the stem bases off - this serves two purposes. It keeps the ones in my bag from getting dirty, and is a good final check that it is indeed a Lactarius.
There are some toxic and deadly little orangish mushrooms too, but the seriously poisonous ones have a stem that is a lot more fibrous than Lactarius. When you snap the base off and it breaks like chalk, that is confirmation that what you picked is in the Russulaceae family.

Cool. All we extremely fragile. Did just that. Caps are rough. Tried checking the latex but man I need a magnifying glass. Wasn't clear. That's about all I could see it was so small. Really excited thought I missed all the candy caps. That beer was made 2-3 months ago.
