Well, maybe not totally on topic, but adds a little levity.
Back on topic, going to give your tek a shot tonight.

So I'm new to grains. About to go wbs the first time ever using Frank's 12 step tek. If I wanted to use oats instead follow every thing else the same besides the oat prep right? I would still use 5 quarts of oats for one 66qt tub right?

Right. Well, you can play with that number too. No harm in putting 6 jars if you have 6 that are clean and ready. I just made a tub like that myself.
But yes generally 5 quarts of spawn is enough for a brick of coir and 2 quarts of verm.

I called the company I found locally and was told it's actually an 80lbs bag (website says 88) and it's only 17.85. Much cheaper than wbs. Just feels right.

Just called my local feed store; $13.25 for 20 kilograms (44lbs). Definitely trying it out. I have a few different methods in mind I'd like to try though.

Does anyone remember the old school rye method of adding 250ml of rye to 180ml of water to quart jars then p/cing for an hour? Think that'd work with oats?
(And yes it does work I have done it and have a buddy that still does it with no issues. With rye that is not oats)

Oats have a much thicker hull then rye so rye prep doesn't work as well but you could give it a shot.

I've tried it a few times with different PC times and amounts of water. It kind of works but the grains on the top of the jar never get completely hydrated.

Good to know. that's somewhat the same with rye, I give them a good shake right out of the p/c while still hot and it seems to even the moisture out a fair bit. I'll do a bit of tinkering tomorrow with it and see how it works oat.

I always shook the shit out of mine coming out of the PC. It helped but the end results were never as good as what I get when doing a soak simmer or strait boil prep.

I believe that. Personally I do RRs rye tek. I'm more asking for a buddy that does the old school way. Rye is rediculously expensive here so switching over would be a huge benifit. It's just the old way is so much easier than soaking/boiling/drying/loading/pcing. So if he could do it same way he does but with oats it'd be stupid not to right.

I usually use RRs rye prep for my oats. The old school method will work. It's not optimal but the jars will colonise. Oats hold more water than rye so you need to use more water than you would with rye for the old school method. Exactly how much I can't remember.

Good to know. I was gunna try 170ml, 180ml, 190ml, 200ml. See what one looked nicest and tweak from there. For the majority of my jars I'm just going to use the original tek posted on this thread. I'm just doing this for a buddy.
