Ha. I take it you watched it too. I watched it the other day out of curiosity, but I couldn't finish it. Really terrible movie imo.

Watch what?  I heard the term used on FoxNews.

Ah - that term was in the interview movie - they kind of made a joke about it. I thought you were referring to that. I didn't realize Fox News used the term too.

Yeah, they do.  I think they did it in the context of the movie, now that I think about it.  I had no idea it came from the movie, but perhaps someone at Fox got a preview???

What's confusing?

The media narrative of "North Korea wants to bomb us for our freedom" has already been cemented. And now that the movie has been released, nobody gives a shit about this story anymore. Therefore any new developments (like "hey we had the whole fucking thing wrong") will fall on deaf ears.

I'm still waiting for any evidence that it was anybody else.  And I do believe the threats out of N. Korea speak for themselves.

They did investigate.  Their opinion is that it was a Nork op.  I am eagerly awaiting any dingbat's nomination of the other party with motivation to do this

An ex employee who felt he was wronged. Someone wronged by Sony. Someone pissed off at their litigation of file sharers.
There is a ton of motivation.
It is entirely plausible for the hacker to have put the "Interview North Korea" junk in there to throw the FBI off their tracks. Again it's hiding your tracks 101.
None of the evidence that points to NK can be trusted because of the ability to spoof said evidence.

All of which would apply to anything that Sony ever produced anywhere.  Why now with the Interview?  Critical thinking.  Try it.  I'm not saying there aren't other possibilities.  I am saying that all other scenarios are lesser probabilities.

Instead of telling me to try critical thinking, you should try it yourself.
It's entirely plausible that the reason it was done now was to try to throw the blame to NK. Breaking into a company's servers is a serious offence and means jail time if caught (see past cases such as HB Gary). Covering ones' tracks by pretending to be a NK sympathizer is a great way to throw the FBI off your path.

It could very well of been NK too. The fact of the matter is the proof that exists is not hard enough to say one or the other, and the fact that it is easily spoofed just underlines that even more. NK certainly has the motives to do it, but it would be remiss to ignore the possibility I mentioned, that it could have been someone expertly covering their tracks by shifting the blame.

I know the whole hacking thing is a huge mystery to many people and as such they don't understand it and think "if it points to NK it must be so".

At no point in that post have you even proposed an alternative actor who might have the motivation.

And this

Quote:

Stop it.  I see this shit all the time in the children.  The word isn't "of"  It is "have".  "Could've" is not a contraction of "could of".  It is a contraction of "could have".

You are right with the grammar thing. I hate bad grammar so thanks for catching that. I am surprised I wrote that.

Back on topic though:
I mentioned a few alternative actors:

- An ex-employee who felt jilted by the company and decided it's payback time
- A hacking group (like anonymous for example) that is upset at Sony for their litigation of file sharing

Corporate security is a joke. That being said an ex-employee would have vital information of how Sony's network was structured, where the weak points were, etc. It is much easier to break into a company network when you know the layout and how it operates.

One of the main things that makes me question NK is that one of the proxy points that was used was accessed via a NK link. That would be a very amateur mistake, which doesn't match the level of sophistication and dedication that was used in the attack. Not hiding your tracks properly is a mistake you just don't make as a hacker. But it could easily have been spoofed to put the FBI on a false tangent. Access logs are easily spoofed / deleted. That is one of the very first things you learn when reading how to hack networks.

If it really was NK, they made some pretty huge mistakes.

Not according to that article

Quote:

The investigators believe the disgruntled former employee or employees may have joined forces with pro-piracy hacktivists, who have long resented the Sony’s anti-piracy stance, to infiltrate the company’s networks.

Think about it. They never actually stole the movie, they just claimed that if it were released there would be terrorist attacks. They were given credibility because they had hacked Sony weeks earlier and released private communications that were embarrassing to the company and stole other NON Korea related films. Nothing about their actions made anyone think about North Korea until they started talking about The Interview almost like an afterthought - weeks after the actual hack.

And I don't think anyone can claim to know what Kim Jun Un would think about a movie about him. There's no such thing as bad publicity and the plot actually sounds like one of his paranoid delusions - the CIA is out to kill him.

That seems most likely and was my first thought when I heard of the hack. It's much more difficult to blindly navigate around a network you don't know - an ex employee would know the network, its weak points, and how to attack to cause the most collateral damage.

Indeed. I think the knee jerk reaction of NK satisfies the need for patriotism and the Us vs. Them mentality that is very prevalent in the US. A disgruntled ex-employee doesn't have the same pizazz.

It's not a patriotism thing.  Do you really think a disgruntled employee would go to all that trouble?  Risk their lives?  Don't forget, if they get identified they are going to jail for a long time.
