The year was 1997-1998 when there were only 2 internet browsers available: internet explorer by microsoft and Netscape navigator
What happened , microsoft released a bunch of hacks and worms into the system and there were all kinds of problems with netscape - crashes, stalls ... all kind of shit. eventually netscape died

heard that netscape became mozilla browser, that then spawned firefox.
So, in effect, I'm still using netscape.

Yes, I remember. And Navigator didn't get unstable due to hacking by MS; Microsoft just bundled its IE browser with Windows and other MS software and people started to use it because they didn't have to download/borrow any additional software just to get on the net. Also, Netscape didn't keep up with new features, resulting its browser to become obsolete within a few years. MS was sued for years because of the bundling 'trick' I mentioned. All this is very well documented, unlike the conjecture in the OP.
Also, there were additional browsers available, such as Arachne and Opera.

Opera was also released in the mid 1999s. Yeah i remember the Larry days, although i didnt play those games much.

Exactly. If you remember there were like 10 3.5" floppy disk needed to install it. Why do that when IE came with microsoft. Now that everyone has high speed firefox dominates IE.

I have to try that......your ever use BitchX? lol. I set media servers up for people and I always use linux on the media servers. I love that you can login via telnet and use lynx and what not. How awesome that everything you need can be accessed via telnet. When they call me with a problem I can easily login and use commands like "top" and df. I love text based shit.

I telnet on a regular basis to the media servers I have built for people. I can fix absolutely every problem they have with the exception of problems in their xwindows. If Mike calls me and tells me his computer is saying he needs to update XBMC I can do sudo apt-get install xbmc(I know its Kodi now). If he says man it's running slow I can run sudo top and see what's dragging him down. He tells me he wants to make a new folder for his go pro videos I could do something like
cd /media
cd /4TB
sudo mkdir gopro
sudo cp -R /media/goprosdcard /media/4TB/gopro
telnet solves all and is absolutely not obsolete
