In this thread I will present a rudimentary overview of Korean history. I will follow up with more intricate posts that detail battles, political movements, and general events of Korean history.
Korean History: Rudimentary Overview, 18 BC - PresentLocation of KoreaKorea is located in East Asia. Korea is a penunsula that jutes out into three seas. On the West side the Yellow Sea borders Korean. To the South is the Korean Straight, which is just a ferry ride away to Japan. Further South Leads to the East China Sea. the East China Sea. Sea of Japan. The Three Kingdoms On the Korean peninsula small tribes of people organized into three kingdomes named: Goguryo (고구려), Baekje (벡제). and Silla (신라). Silla: 57 BC - 935 AD
Baekje: 18 BC - 660 AD
Goguryo: 37 BC - 668 AD The three kingdoms broke out in war and it was the Silla Kingdom that came out victorious. Unified Silla was prominent in the southern part of Korea from 668-935. Despite Silla's victory, Dae Jo-yeong, a prior Goguryo aristocrat named the northern part of Korea Balhae, which was essentially a surviving state of the Goguryo Kingdom. Balhae was created in 698. For some time Silla and Balhae coexisted on the peninsula. North and South States PeriodSilla: 57 AD - 935 AD
Balhae: 698 AD - 926 AD During this North and South state period in Korea there was prosperity in both states. It's just as educational for me as it is for you.
Making these threads is just a means of learning.
Organizing information is one important key in understanding overall concepts. That's what I am doing. Organizing it.
I am also making it vulnerable to public scrutiny so that if I am incorrect about something it can be fixed by a simple conversation.

China had emperors and Korea had kings that, with permission from China, ruled their own country. In order to Gain social status, many Koreans learned Chinese script and language. I have heard it said that Korean people today are extremely focused on education because of the experience with China. Similarly, Korea spends billions of dollars teaching its children English.
It does indeed seem like contemporary South Korea is futile. But with a closer look we can see that South Korea is developing at a very fast pace. Samsung and LG are extremely popular around the world. This is incredible considering Korea was ravaged of its culture from 1905 and then leveled to rubble during the Korean war. Despite the brutalities and its border with communist North Korea, the small Korean peninsula is managing to make quick progress in a competitive world of political states.

There is definitely a lack of good info on north Korea. All the documentaries I've found are "bland" to say the least.

Indeed. Some of them are.
In combination they provide a unique perspective though.
I feel that it is important to acquire both sides of the story. There are two sides to everything, many different view points, and lots of distorted media.
I feel that South Korea is democracy's biggest stronghold in Asia, with Japan sort of falling in second. Both of the countries are heavily occupied with American troops and to the North exists North Korea, Russia, And China - more communist nations. I suspect that South Korea is meant to serve as an example of successful democracy to the more communist nations. To me it seems obvious that the presence of U.S. forces in Korea are there to defend that democratic stronghold at all costs. We defended at all costs during the Korea War. Coincidentally Korea is doing well as a country. I think that the U.S. wants to spread democracy in Asia - even by assimilating Japan.
I am not into politics and so I don't have many opinions about democracy v. communism. I am simply reporting and discussing what I read.
What I know is that North Korea was created at the end of WWII. The end of the war brought Japan's occupation of Korea to an end and the Soviet Russians and Americans -- the super powers -- came to a deal and thus split Korea in two. Essentially North Korea was made to be communist by Russia, and South Korea was made to be a democracy by the United States. Strangely, even though Korea is its own country, it is still occupied heavily by another country -- the United States. Indeed, it does seem like Korea has been a stomping ground for the larger nations of the world.
What I am interested in is How North Korea's government initially formed and where it took most of it's influence from.

Yeah this is the type of information I was hoping to get out of some of the films I've watched. I've read a little bit Kim il-sung, but it felt very "scripted and bias".
