Cleveland man gets life sentence for drug charges
By Community Reports
Bakari Abdul Brown, 37, of Cleveland, was sentenced to life in prison by a jury of his peers in the 253rd District Court on Thursday, Dec. 11, with Judge Chap B. Cain III presiding. Brown was found guilty of possessing 44 grams of cocaine and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon on Wednesday, Dec. 10.
The jurors heard evidence that officers with the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office arrived at a residence south of Cleveland on Jan. 14, 2014, to serve a narcotics search warrant. The investigation and search of the house netted 44 grams of cocaine, a loaded .25 caliber pistol, five digital scales, five Pyrex beakers and a whisk used to render crack cocaine from powder cocaine.
During the punishment phase of trial, the six women and six men making up the jury heard that they were convicting Brown of his seventh and eighth felony offenses. They heard evidence that Brown had been distributing cocaine for the better part of 17 years when he was not in jail.
It took the jurors 20 minutes to decide Brown’s fate by sentencing him to life in prison. He will not be eligible for parole for these offenses until he has accounted for at least 15 years.
District Attorney Logan Pickett handled the prosecution for the State of Texas.

Twenty minutes is an awfully short time to decide whether to damn a man for life, or even for fifteen years. Hopefully they made the right decision.

Hard to say. Guess his state doesn't have any 3 strike or habitual offender laws since he made it to his 7th and 8th felony. If he doesn't have violent offenses he will probably get out one day..until he gets caught selling again.

Bakari Abdul Brown
Sounds like another Irishman. 15 years is a long time for an oz and half of cocaine. I know a guy here who got caught for selling an oz of it and he did under 2 years, he was not a habitual offender though. I don't think anyone should go to jail for selling drugs. I mean people call you looking for it, there are no real pushers. Now the taxpayers have to pay for this guy's toilet paper. And someone already replaced him.

I don't really mind this guy getting life in prison because of the fact that had unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon.

That's a horrible thought. And 7th and 8th felony now. This guy could have gotten felonies 1-6 the very first time he went to court at age 18 with a public defender because he was poor. Who knows. Sucks to be him for sure.

Exactly. People who have been caught with even one mushroom should go to prison for a long time for owning a gun.

Drug laws are a fucking joke. You are selling something that others want. And they want it to use it themselves. Not to do harm to others or anything. Who in the fuck thinks YEARS in prison is an appropriate punishment for that???

This article is about a crack dealer, not a guy who owns one mushroom; that would be a different conversation.
I believe a crack dealer with multiple felonies owning a gun is more likely to use deadly force than the average gun owner. Lock 'em up!

True, however a gun owner caught with one mushroom would also face heavy jail time. I don't think people should be locked up because they might commit a crime - only people who actually do commit crimes should be punished.

Being a felon and possessing a firearm is committing a crime. I'm not sure what you mean about locking people up because they "might commit a crime."

True, but it's a bullshit law. I wish Brady would have fucking just died. I know so many poor 18 year olds that got felonies for nonsense offenses because they couldn't afford attorneys. I honestly believe that law is a way to get guns out of Americans hands. Make everyone a felon.
