That's an assumption.
Read this book where a cardiologist documents near death experiences of dozens of his patients and discovers things do not seem to stop when your heart does, you just logout of your body and go on elsewhere.
I am assuming every one of his patients' hearts started up again. Get back to me when he has a documented account from one of his patients whose heart didn't start up again.

I don't need anecdotes to comfort me, personally. A careful balance of passion and reason- rational romanticism- is what keeps me alive NOW, which is all "I" really have, for in the future "I" will be someone else.

Near death isn't death.
And couldn't those moments be explained scientifically? I'm sure the brain is still functioning, if just for a short while, after death. Like a final dream if you will.
Read that book, its got stuff like blind people seeing things with their spirit eyes or from vantage points that could not have been had by the patient.
That doesn't prove in any way the existence of a God.

That wasnt what I was reacting to. I reactyed to Prisoner#1's hypothesis that once you are dead its all over and you can't "choose God".
Consciousness doesnt end when you die. Lots of near death experiences and supernatural experiences all point in the same direction.

near death isnt dead and speculation by people recording what someone on drugs said doesnt make for a convincing argument of an afterlife to anyone other than those that already believe

This guy had a near death hallucination and then went looking to find other people who had near death hallucinations. If this was real there would be thousands of books supporting it. Guess what. There isn't. It's bunk just like reincarnation, the spirit, the soul and life after death.

You have never heard of the little boy named Colton who had a NDE? There was recently a movie in theatres about it and it was a best selling book. Its called "Heaven is for real"
I would ask you to check it out, but as an atheist, you already have your mind made up

Fortunately I don't have to discredit it because we all know dead men don't tell stories. Never have. Never will.
Where are these disembodied consciousnesses? You are so sure that consciousness exists outside of the brain, yet there is not a single case where this has been proven - just untestable ghost stories. There have been billions of people who have lived and died on earth and not a single one has made themselves known after their death to anyone.

That is a good description of just about any movie - 95% of them fiction.

Umm..before it was a movie it was a book..and before it was a book it was reality.
I don't get your point..
like I said...atheists will not even attempt to look into said experience because atheist already has mind made up
