Trying to make Handwarmers, simple air activated oxidation reaction, that WONT WORK
    #20957216 - 12/10/14 12:40 PM (9 years, 5 months ago)

So,

im trying to make some air activated hand warmers, like these. the ingredients are listed on the bag, Iron Ore, Cellulose, Salt, and Iron Ore and moisture.

So i found a few recepies online, the concept seems fairly simple, salt corrodes the iron, which creates an exothermic reaction, and gives off heat.

But, for some reason, I cant get it to work. I even tried substituting chlorine granules from my hot tub to really get it going....

Ive also tried 2 different suppliers of iron ore from ebay and amazon, one was magnetic, the other was not...

And yet with all the combinations ive tried, Nothing is giving off heat!

So im trying to figure out what might be the problem. So far the only conclusion i have come to is that the iron ore powder that ive been shipped, is potentially fully oxidized already.....

any one have any other theories, or a way to test if the ore would be oxidized?

have you considered http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_acetate#Heating_pad as an alternative?

Im only trying to make this particular type as I happen to own some iron ore deposits, and im trying to find a value added good that I can manufacture with them.

Uhm, are you sure this is supposed to work with iron ore? As I understand it, iron ore is by definition oxidized, or at least a combination of iron salts (and therefore already bound to other ions, all of them entirely or partly oxygen). Perhaps if you just used very finely dispersed metallic iron particles (e.g. filings) it would work. But that would mean that if you want to use the iron from your own deposits, you'd have to run it through a furnace first. Then again, the same would be true for the vast majority of applications that could turn your iron ore into value added products.

Call me old-fashioned but I just jam my hands in the toaster(after unplugging it , while it's still hot.)

Maybe its the quality of the ore?  Like some are pretty weathered or oxidized already?  Maybe fresh crushed and separated and stored is better.  Maybe find some lab grade iron?  I see 1 pound for 10 bucks of hydrogen reduced  high purity powder.  Says its good for chemical reactions.

As I said, iron ire is oxidized by definition. Iron filings could work; doesn't need to be lab grade either, just not oxidized.
