Pastywhyte likes mini mono's 64

I often get asking about how I do mini monos. I have spent a fair amount of time playing around with them so I will offer my thoughts and experiences. It seems that with the exception of a terrible writeup on shotgun style mini monos, there is not much out there on the subject. Personally I feel this is a shame, everyone should have a mini mono. I will also be updating this writeup periodically with more pics and things I am testing so its a work in progress.
Tub volume and shape I have a few different tubs that I use. There are a few things to keep in mind. First is height. No matter what, you want enough height to fruit in. My 20 quart mini's are pretty short, about 8.5". But I only have a 2.5"-3" sub in it. Enough to do 2 quarts spawn and 3 quarts sub for a 1:1.5 ratio. This leaves 6" which is a little close but enough given the size of fruit you can expect from a sub that size. With these I am usually looking for slightly smaller fruits between 3"-5"and a dense pinset. Given the size of the tub I still use the same size holes as I do for the larger mono's. 1.25" is my go to hole saw.
So after a great deal of experimentation I have come to a few configurations I like with a mini. A traditional hole configuration works well but needs to be cased. It will typically have very high FAE. The lids also fit poorly which also adds to any that sit at the tops of the stacks. Things like that do need to be considered for the tub you use.
20 quart with standard holes.
If you don't want to case your tub you may want to cut down the FAE a bit. I found that in a mono this size one hole on the bottom long side still and can achieve a decent pinset. These were uncased and still did all right. Remember my house is very dry, I'm certain this design can hold better RH for most people than even mine did
Though I find they still do better cased, probably cause of my dry ass house.
I also have some that I do a hybrid hole configuration. I drill 5 1/4" holes in two rows, and inch apart and staggered. When you go to fruit it pull the tape off and then cover the bottom row of holes. Once the pinset is in you can pull it off completely to boost the FAE. Remember to case and mist if needed. Notice the dry rings, they can help dial the tub in once you know what to look for.
I also like my 30 quart tub, its taller and longer. I use 3 quarts spawn and 4-6 quarts sub with usually brings it to 2.5-3" It has a better fitting lid so it has more more holes, one at sub level on the bottoms on each side, and on the top of the shorter sides a good cluster of 3/16 holes. They can also be dialed in by taping some of the holes or removing tape as needed. Its actually a lot easier to do than stuffing poly
Pro's and Con's So there are always pro's and con's to anything. I will discuss them as objectively as possible.
Pro's -Smaller amounts of sub and spawn. Fewer eggs in one basket so to speak.
-Can be spawned with cakes without needing 50 of them. 8-12 cakes can easily spawn a mini monotub. Is a great way for new people to get their feet wet.
-Great for experimentation. With less spawn and sub needed its easy to make a commitment to experiement with side by sides, and with less loss on the "failed experiments".
-Easy to harvest. I find it far easier to remove the sub block from the smaller tubs.
-Effective use of spawn and space. I can fit 4 of my 20 quart mini's in the same space as a 66 quart mono.
-Easy to move and handle. They are way easier to deal with in that regard.
Con's -Until you get used to dialing them in you might find they get dry too easy. The same size holes in your 66 quart mono will provided a lot more FAE in these mini's. A casing will teach you how to get it right.
-Can be tricky to line in the smaller space. I find it best to tape the edges of the liner to the tub and let the weight of the sub pull it tight. I then just drag scissors through the plastic. I will be adding pics to show this process in more detail later. for now here is how I set it up.
What you can expect Same as with a standard mono you should strive for a dry oz per quart of spawn first flush. So with a typical spawn ratio for these of 2 quarts spawn you should see at least 2 oz first flush. Usually over 3 flushes a QP is pretty reasonable to expect. I have also spawned these with a little as 1 quart spawn to 4 sub and 3 spawn 3 sub. Yields will often adjust accordingly unless you use a very nutritious sub.
More updates and pics to come. Questions will also influence edits down the road so comments and queries are welcome

I was about to write 'Pasty if people can't figure out how to scale down a mono then they don't deserve to have one' but then I read it and I smiled hard.
Love your new pics.

I used to think the same thing but, I get so many about it that I figured a link to a writeup would be easier long term
I am working on new pics, those are mostly recycled
I also have a few taller larger style minis that I recently aquired from a buddy who couldn't use em no more. I will be expanding the post to cover. Got a few other really small styles that were designed by the same buddy who's design I am going to continue working on and adjusting. So I expect this write up to be a lot longer and more inclusive of ways to fruit bulk mono style on a variety of scales. It will be a work in progress

I find that the PE bend over so they usually work fine in the mini monos
Really it would take exceptionally tall genetics to hit the lid as you usually have around 5"-6"
Also your right these do well for exotics, they like the extra FAE. Beautiful ALT7
They also do good for some eddies and medicinals
