Possible Pan Olivaceous and Pan Cinctulus?
    #21028914 - 12/26/14 05:08 PM (9 years, 1 month ago)

Habitat:
Both found on the same cow patty in northern California (Bay Area) in late November

Gills:
Species 1: Greyish Brown, unattatched.
Species 2: greyish turning black with maturation. not sure if attatched or not

Stem:
Species 1: dark yellow, brown blotching, smooth texture, straight lines, Length, diameter, color, texture, hollow, thick.
Species 2: light grey, smooth, very long and fragile, hollow, thin.

Cap:
Species 1:
fairly wide in respect to stem, yellowish brown same as stem, smooth, spherical, concave.
Species 2: not wide, light grey, some almost black, occasional brown nipple, smooth, toothed edged with maturation, spherical, convex.

Spore print color:
Species 1: Brown (makes me think its pan Foenisecii, not Cinctulus)
Species 2: Black (possibly pan Campanulatus)

Bruising:
No bruising for either that i know of.

Other information:
growing very well in a humidity box with a cow patty inside of it.
species 2 seems to be growing a lot faster than species 1
I think that species 1 is panaeolus Foenisecii because of the brown spore print

Species 1

Species 2

1. Stropharia?
2. Panaeolus papilionaceus group.

I think agrocybe on #1. Compare to A. pediades.

On what basis do you think species 1 is agrocybe? I see that they look very similar to pictures of Pediates, but various sources say they usually only grow in summer and rarely on dung. I found these by the hundreds on cow patties in late november. In addition, most of the pictures of Pediates ive seen have completely spherical, convex caps. A lot of these that i found have wide concave tops.

I'm not sure, Agrocybe could be right on second thought, I'd doubt A. pediades though.

General macroscopic features, especially considering spore print color- I don't have a great computer monitor, but spore print looks very brown to me- i would expect it to be more purple for stropharia or protostropharia.  I agree they are not a good fit for A. pediades, just that they share a lot of features and would be a good spot to start when really trying to dig into the species level phylogeny.
