to me intelligence is how well your mind grasp ideas, concepts, priniciples, etc. you know, it describes how well you understand.
-------------------- Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.

Who are 'we?'
-------------------- To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.' Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence. Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains. Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

who is more intelligent?
The man who spends his entire life obsessing over a math equation, finally solving it shortly before his death?
or the man who spends his days relaxing on the beach, letting his mind leisurely roam in space?

I believe that intelligence is simply knowledge.
There are many types of intelligence. There's the obvious type of those who are "brainy" .
I also believe that athletic ability, artistic ability, musical ability, are all types of intelligence.

I believe intelligence is essentially just the ability to organize ideas well(to "put things together" if you will), combined with a certain thoughtfulness. This is true of all types of intelligence, whether you're talking book-smarts, street-smarts, or whatever.

I would say that intelligence is the ability to grasp new concepts and add them to an existing framework, as well as the speed at which this occurs.

Well, it cant be defined so narrowly. you could say that intellegence could be general knowledge, but then you'd have to say that the specialist is'nt very intelligent. Even if he has a deep intuition for his area of expertise that's seemingly above everyone else.
You couldnt necessarily say intelligence is specializing either, because many autistics are EXTREMELY focused and speciallized in areas like math ect, but have trouble dealing with very simple changes that interrupt their daily routines.
So, maybe we can choose a middle man... Somebody who can managed both: A specialty and general knowledge. SO his 'intelligence' could be tallied according to his ability to encompass everything and his specialty, right?
This may seem adequate, but it is deceptively simple. We are useing general concepts in a broad and loose fashion. The real problem comes in when you try to measure it and/or define the smallest 'parts' of it. This is where you get into a swirling torent of pain, dealling with concepts like human nature, the enviroment, Humans opportunity for action IN this enviroment ect. How to become 'intelligent'; how to find truth and how to measure it in my fellow human beings if possible.
Once you start dealling with this and human nature, it would'nt be satisfying to deal with cognitive intelliegence alone. Because cognition is limited in it's opportunities for action. ALot of intellegence comes from the emotions, intuition, one's emotional flexibility. And skill that knows how to change old personality structures in equal or better ways so as to have the ability to adapt to anything the world can throw at you. TO truely apply yourself, so you can excell at whatever you put your mind to.
This all essentially begs the question what kind of life should i live? What kind of thoughts should i have? what should i devote my energy to? what kind of training should i undergo to get these cognitive and personality traits?

For me ...
Intelligence is the ability to think, adapt, create, problem solve ... to be able to imagine and dream.
Knowledge is merely a collection or library of information.

probably neither is more intelligent. it all depends on the reason behind it. like you know there are intelligent people, but they make dumb choices. kinda the difference between being intelligent and being smart. being smart would be what you do with it. mmmmmm...yeah

He isn't going to shit with that math equation as he dies right after solving it.
And one can do whatever the hell they want with their intelligence. One does work to allow others to see and the other hangs out on a beach. This alone does NOTHING to show which one is more intelligent than the other. Peace.

I can define it one way and you can define it another way and a panel of people that are claimed to be highly intelligent can make a test to test intelligence.... but setting some sort of standardized intelligence definition, while mildly beneficial, still belies the fact that we are all different as individuals, and we all think differently... We don't really know how the brain works, but we can measure some of its abilities.
Often people with poor speaking skills might come across as stupid, but they might have astonishing math abilities.
Without a well laid out map of how the brain works its impossible to accurately measure intelligence.

I feel intelligence is the ability to make connections between observations, as well as express these connections. It also has a lot to do with processing information recieved from others (like having somebody TELL you the world is round, and being able to determine that they are probably correct, without having to circle the earth to see it with your own eyes..) and determining their validity by running this new information through all the other information already in your brain to see if it fits properly.
Another big part of intelligence in my opinion is being able to change everything you know if a new piece of solid information is obtained that turns everything else upside down.
And of course, being able to finally understand that we are dealing with PROBABILITY and will basically never know anything, just will know possibilities and probabilities.
-------------------- Insert an "I think" mentally in front of eveything I say that seems sketchy, because I certainly don't KNOW much. Also; feel free to yell at me. In addition: SHPONGLE
