I prepared them every which way under the sun, to no avail. Even pressure cooked them twice, a few days apart, and the problem still persisted. Switching grains immediately resolved it.
Everything is blowing up with healthy growth now and I haven't seen a contam on grains other than some crap on some WBS that really liked the sunflower seeds.
I'm using whole oats now, for what it's worth.

Rye, wheat, and barley are almost identical grains. I got a 25lb bag of HRWW and it's doing me very well.

Inocuole said: I dunno, I stopped using rye recently and it's been a positive experience. I think the ones I had were treated with endospores or something because they consistently went bacterial.
Is this endospore treatment a real thing? Couldn't it be circumvented with an extra long soak? Do you know who manufactures the rye you used? I'm actually investigating this.

Well that's good man. Never used whole outs before. Never seen much about it either. Is it same prep as rye berries?

I've prepped them a few different ways so far, all of them about as easy as the rye prep. They're certainly easier than WBS, but I think they are just a touch messier than rye.
The hull keeps the starch and moisture well inside and keeps them from ever clumping though. The anatomy of the oat grain is a touch different than wheat, rye, and barley, and I find it to be a very desirable difference.

Hmm maybe I'll look in to that. I have a connection with a local organic flour/cereal maker that gets huge bulk amounts of all sorts of grain. So far I've just used the rye but maybe I'll see what else he has. I know he has oats for sure. Can't think of all the other ones though..

My most recent prep was impossibly simple. Put oats in large pot, dump in boiling water to about 2-3 times the level of the oats, put on the lid, wait 24 hours, drain most of the cold water away, dump in boiling water again, give it about a minute, then dump the water and oats together into a strainer this time, so they steam dry like RR's rye prep. I'm finding it really hard to get them too wet, because the wet part of them is always inside the hull, so they don't get squishy.
Not actually heating the pot ensures you don't accidentally make oatmeal at the bottom, but they still benefit from the soak, and the hot ass water.
Gonna do a write up on it right now actually, it was perfect.

It was Mudafuka that inspired me and a few others to get into oats, time to pay it forward I guess.

Inocuole said: As far as I'm concerned if I never had to touch BRF again I would be in good shape. RGS is rye grass seed, which is different from rye berries, which are what people normally grow cubes on. HRWW is hard red winter wheat, probably won't come across that one very often, but some people around here grow on it. Whole oats (with the hull intact), WBS, rye, wheat, or millet will all work great.
BRF is awesome just because the BRF cake slurries rock so much for inoculating grain.

I do have some BRF and I finally have good jars to use for making LI and slurries. I hadn't considered that but that's certainly an option. Slurry is 100x easier than making a SGFC.
Do you pretty much just do it exactly like an LI but with a colonized BRF cake chunk?

Yes, except the amount needed is much less for inoculation. I do about a tablespoon for a quart. Also depending on the size of the cake you're using, you might need to PC a fork or a knife to cut it up in a SAB and drop it in. But beyond that, it's pretty much exactly the same.

Also, the oats. Are they just wheat oats? What would I be asking for when I am buying them?

There is no such thing as wheat oats. There's whole oats, and there's whole wheat. Both are grains, but oats can't be wheat and wheat can't be oats.

TheLady,
Sorry, man. A BRF slurry is something you won't need to know about for a long time. I didn't mean to derail your thread. It's basically a blended up PF Tek cake in sterile water used to inoculate substrate.
