PF Tek Slow Colonizers
    #21028277 - 12/26/14 02:17 PM (9 years, 4 months ago)

I'm still pretty new with all of this, having only two previous pf tek grows under my belt. Currently, I have 20 jars inoculated (2 different 'strains'). My previous grow fully colonized in about 14 days from innoc.

These jars are colonizing very slowly! I'm actually worried that my contam barrier is too deep and preventing proper GE. My first 2 grows, I used coarse verm for the substrate and the barrier. This grow, I'm using coarse verm for the substrate and fine verm for my contam barrier.

Thoughts?

NOTE: Room temperature is 74F

I wouldn't inject sterile water in my cake unless it was stalling completely. Draw a line with a sharpie around your myc growth and come back in 2-3 days.

Your temperatures are 6 degrees below optimal colonization temps (80f). This will slow you down but it's better in the long run as anything higher then 83f favors contamination growth while mycelium is slowed to 2/3s of it's speed. This is just extra information, your temps are fine and I DO NOT SUGGEST A SPACE HEATER.

I've commented on enough "Left My Space Heater Running" threads to tell you it's just not worth it.

Not sure why you messed with the water content when it's proven to work . Your contam barrier isn't "too deep", it's fine. GE is passive and will happen just fine no matter how much verm you put up there. If you didn't pack it down then there are tiny air pockets where the CO2 will rise from.

You said it yourself:
You used two different strains and you're trying to compare them. Your first batch of jars has what we refer to as Tomentose growth (Slow, fluffy). This has no bearing on fruiting potential. All it means is that your myc is in a nutritious environment and having a good time.

Your second batch has Rhizomorphic (faster, viney) growth. Your bottom picture is a great example of this.

Here are more:

Rhizo:

Tomentose:

Don't worry about speed between different strains. Your water content was messed with but not to an extent that would stop colonization. What you essentially did was deprive them of some of the H2O they need to survive and multiply.

Did I miss anything?

I also had my jars colonise quite slowly, took friggen forever. Over a month!
I used a B+ syringe. My jars were a bit on the wet side too.

People always say rather a bit on the dry side than the wet side.

You want GE (Gas exchange), not FAE so I am very certain that the verm layer is not causing any issues with regards to that.

Out of curiosity which "strains" did you use?

@taGyo -- thanks for the feedback, wasn't aware of the mycelium differentiation there -- very cool!

P.S. I read that coarse verm absorbs more water than fine and needs less. Probably should have ignored that advice heh

For those strains that sounds about right.

All the B+ I always get is always rhizo.
