i usually don't case anything and all my grains/sub mix are exposed. ill fruit directly off the substrate without a casing layer. it doesn't increase contamination anymore than having a casing layer. and its one less step to colonize the casing layer. i use cased and non cased substrates and they both work fine. non cased substrates do fine through many flushes even with dunks between each flush. its not a problem or anymore risk.
ive messed around with this top layer method a few times back in the stone age when fahtster was doing it. i only did it a few times. but i just did 6 tubs with it to mess around again. id generally wait til colonization then case the tub. but now adays i don't case any tubs and still get great yield comparable to a cased substrate. it may not be as pretty as a cased tub, but doing a dunk to rehydrate is fast and effective method after a fat flush. you can really abuse the substrate and still have multiple flushes without contamination.

I'm going to have to try an uncased tub next time around. I'm just paranoid lately because I had a trich outbreak my last couple of grows that really set me back. I started fresh all the way around and think I finally got it kicked in the ass.

Yea, I used lcs for just about the whole time I've been growing and just like that, everything went south. Learned agar and now just g2g. Changed up my bulk also, I used a premix from a hydroponic store and now mix my own and get my coir from a pet supply. So far everything seems on the up n up.

Weird how the middle didn't come in, I think the coir was a lil thick in that area though, mounded up a little

Those are ready now.
Nice job, that is a sexy flush.
It will pin in the spot where it didn't on the next flush most likely.

making it look easy! great job. do you think the depth played a role in fruit size? you noticing any difference? i did about 6 tubs with 1/2" depth.

Sub depth is 3 1/2" if that's what your referring to. The extra top layer of sub at spawn is what I'm playing with and this tub was about 3/4" and the size is very similar to past sizes but the pinset was more dense.
