Selenicereus grandiflorus cutting
    #21020718 - 12/24/14 10:13 AM (9 years, 4 months ago)

Hi.

I have received one month ago a selenicereus grandiflorus ~25cm cutting.
I buried at ~1cm depth 10 cm of this cutting in a slightly moist light soil.
I kept him at 20 degrees under some gentle light.

Nothing happenned until now. No rot, no deshydratation, no root formation and obviously no growth.
What is wrong with my cutting ? Should I wait longer ?

I'm a bit anxious because I wanted to use this as a graft stock for its fast growth rate and it doesnt grow at all. May I split the cutting into more ? I have seen grafts on these that were like 5 cm high.

It can take up to 2 months with some cacti to even start forming roots, I wouldn't move it to check honestly. Just be patient, and maybe try some root stimulator. Keep at it though, you'll have that sucker rooted in no time.

root stimulator isn't needed for rooting cacti, and I just cut mine, and put them directly in soil without even letting them callous, and they root in about a month.
People laugh at my methods, but I root all my cacti this way,and I never loose a single one:wink:
I however do dab the cut end with a dry rag or paper towel first,to dry it off before it goes in the soil though.

Yeah it's not 100% necessary, but as his are taking a while I figured it might help. I use the same methods as you lol. My babies root easy. The biggest thing is not moving them for a LONG time. The roots usually take pretty slow where I'm at.

I always keep mine in an an "active" growing state with my other plants, just like if they had roots, and usually in a month or so,I'll give the old cactus a jiggle, and when it doesn't move back and forth in the pot anymore,it's firmly rooted!
I think keeping them bright and warm encourages roots a lot faster than just throwing them in a an old dark corner to root:shrug:

My cutting has grown a new aerial root these days. Does it mean that it has taken ?
