Comparing 1:2 vs. 1:1.5
    #21013571 - 12/22/14 06:31 PM (9 years, 4 months ago)

I've been experimenting with different spawn ratios lately and thought I would share some results, since TS members are the reason that I can successfully cultivate now.

1st off, I will never use less than a 1:3 ratio. I had a huge contamination issue the first and last time I tried a 1:6 up to a 1:10 ratio. I use WBS for spawn and equal parts coir/vermiculite for my bulk sub. I've always used this bulk sub/spawn combo b/c if it ain't broke...

For any beginners out there, you have to take what you read in these posts and experiment. It's not easy getting a black and white answer on here, but you will find consistency if you read enough.

I digress...  here are the ratios for my bulk sub pics.

Top Right      - 1:3 ratio (2qts WBS/6qts bulk)
Top Left sub  - 1:2 ratio (3qts WBS/6qts bulk)
Bottom sub  - 2:3 ratio (4qts WBS/6qts bulk)

These are a from an Amazonian LGC. This GH was made following a tek from TS. I placed a fogging humidifier inside, since I didn't consolidate my bulk and they were drying out a little more than I would like.

I will definitely consolidate for a full 7 days next round. I wanted to experiment with each and despite the fact that 2/4 fruited quite well, the last grow went even better after I let them consolidate for a full 12 days!
IME, consolidating is absolutely worth it. RR's commented in favor of it enough times, it must be worth trying out.

nice. never been for this method though . There are many variables to growing. The spawn ratio doesnt matter unless you count speed in colonization. Some times you may get lucky with low ratios due to there being fewer gene types, but this is that gene will fruit in your condtion.

also consolidating give time for the mycelium to take hold and metabolize the nutes further. Better to do it in the fruiting container . It will sit until its done so, regardless.

What happened the last time I didn't consolidate is my cakes dried out in the "waiting" period before pinning. The waiting period is about 7-10 days, which I would rather the sub consolidate in a confined area without the possibility of drying out.

As far as ratio not making a difference, I would have to disagree. Yes, I did experiment with smaller ratios with this specific strain, however, I also did the same with PE, Puerto Rican and Albino. I had the same results. At that time I figured if the sub will be colonized by the myc, then why do I need more spawn in each sub? what I found is that the 1:6 and 1:10 attempts will all fore mentioned strains, the flushes were almost a complete wash. Maybe 4-6 fruits per sub. They fruits themselves were weak and scrawny, and to top it all off, they contaminated within 3 weeks!

The more spawn I used, the stronger and more healthy my fruits were. Granted, there isn't a HUGE difference in fruit-health when you're using under a 1:4 ratio, but there is a noticeable difference none the less. Even in the pics I posted today, you can see the difference in succession. The highest ratio had the most abundant AND biggest fruits. The smallest ratio had much less and smaller fruits.

Anyways, thanks for replying to the post. I've been reading so many threads over the past 12 months, it's nice to finally have a little discussion.

I agree with the OP. More spawn equals faster colonization times and higher yield. The grain has way more calories than the coir/verm mix.

I couldnt say but 1:4 is what works for me . I have seen 1:10 work before . Mushrooms are strange . This ms tub is a half inch and it is generally thought thinner sub = smaller fruits  . Not saying thin = big what im saying is what mushrooms do are mostly written in there genes along  with some evormental factors.

I have to agree as well. I've never tested it, but it just doesn't make sense why more spawn would not increase yield to a point. If anyone has tested it and not increased their yield I bet they just let the substrate/mycilium get dehydrated. I can't guess how much it would increase it, but more food has to equal more mushrooms.

I know with certain gourmet mushrooms too high of spawn ratio is a bad thing. IThink recall hearing something about having too high of nutrients in your mono tub can cause problems as well.
