Yes Detroit has very high class rich white neighbor hoods like Grosse Pointe and others. However you have to live in a shitty house that the article said they'll give you 150k for renovations but these houses need much much more than that.

I know. There's that huge radio blackout hole in the middle with nothing on the radio but some preacher telling everyone they're going to hell. And flat, featureless scenery. Gak!

I think you mean to say "what", instead of "where". Ya might wanna watch that when you're making a lame joke about stereotypes.
His question actually had a degree of accuracy though.
Was personally raised in Saskatchewan, have spent a total of almost 20 years living in various places around the province, and have spent several years living in both Manitoba and Québec as points of comparison.
Saskatchewan has a lot of Canadian rednecks; think it goes with the prevalence of farm lands, outdoor manual labour, and small towns.
Canadian rednecks say "aboot" and "eh" with about the frequency that I associate with American rednecks saying "y'all."

Yeah, but I'm pretty sure you would get the $20K up front, which would be a great booster for people looking to start businesses without owing some type of collateral.
Also if you consider other factors such as free healthcare, it wouldn't be so bad. It's actually a really good deal for people who may have some type of long-term illness.
The link specifically states that the money is paid out in portions annually, sadly:
Quote:
The $20,000 bonus is paid in chunks each year when you file your taxes.
It is part of a program that was designed to keep recent graduates living in the province for several years, because Saskatchewan has a prevalence of individuals who get the hell out of the province after graduating. Seems that was unsuccessful enough that now they are trying to get graduates from anywhere else to move to the province.
Free healthcare is a big deal though. As someone who is chronically ill and frequently visits doctors, specialists, hospitals and is on disability, it is pretty important to my quality of life. Not clear on when it kicks in for people who move here from out of country though. When my girlfriend from Texas was first inquiring about moving to Canada there was some mention of not having coverage for a certain period of time at the start, but my memory on the specifics is a little spotty.

I've lived in about 12 different places in Alberta, every direction I've also lived in BC and have not once heard anyone say "Aboot", I've heard people say "Eh" though.
Seriously though, I'd say Rednecks make up majority of North American culture. When I think of Canadians or Americans describing them as Rednecks pretty much sums it up. You either got Rednecks or you've got City Sheeple who's never seen a deer in their life unless one strays into city limits.

Do not recall ever hearing "aboot" in Alberta, but only spent about a month there around Calgary and Edmonton. "Eh" is pretty much cross-Canada, and I know I catch myself saying it sometimes.
Grew up in the backwoods areas of Saskatchewan; mostly hunting and fishing, for what little I got out of the house. Direct family didn't live on farmland, but spent a lot of time helping out with farming and raising cattle and bison. Raised in pretty redneck culture myself.
"Aboot" was not quite as prevalent as "Eh," but still heard it quite a bit growing up. Moved off to Montréal after high school and never heard it again -- even after moving back to Saskatchewan in the Saskatoon area. Always just associated it with the lifestyle, but maybe it is peculiar to niche areas around southern Saskatchewan. Personally been told that my own pronunciation sounds more like "a boat."

Some Canadians do say the "ou" sound in "about" in a distinctive way, but I've never heard anyone pronounce it "aboot" in actual conversation. In comedy stuff that focuses on exaggerating Canadian stereotypes, sure, but not in normal speech.

You don't notice it becauseyou probably say it yourself by reflex without even realizing it.
As a frenchman, I pay special attention to accents because I have a strong one and I hate it. So I deliberately try to mimic people I talk to. That being said, I can definitely confirm that "aboot" is extremely common. Almost everybody says "aboot" instead of "About". The again its not the same sound as "boot". But its defineletly not pronouced as strongly as the word "bout (boxing math)". But when I compare it to American movies, there is a clear difference.
Don't try to shake off your Canadian culture. embrace it.

Nope, I say it correctly and have never heard it said as it's depicted in comedies. All I know is I fucking miss living in BC and hope I make it back there once again.

First you say "aboot" is a common pronunciation, and then you say that the sound isn't actually "boot". So why describe this common pronunciation by spelling it "aboot", if that isn't actually what the pronunciation sounds like at all?
Examples of Canadians saying "about" with a distinctive pronunciation: http://dialectblog.com/2011/03/20/canadian-raising-nobody-says-aboot/

Detroit actually has some really nice suburbs. Most people just don't know about them. Basically, the further down the mile road that you go down, the more ghetto it gets. But there's areas of Detroit that are apparently beautiful suburbs, and have almost no crime.
You'd still have to live in detroit..

Take this example. No "oo" sound whatsoever, I'd say it's somewhere between "about","abowt" and "aboat".
Scottish people, on the other hand, really do say (and even spell) "about" as "aboot". I've never heard a Canadian say it like this (except for Scottish immigrants who retained their accent):
