ID Request 12-22-2014
    #21012814 - 12/22/14 03:55 PM (9 years, 4 months ago)

Hello Folks,

Before I get started with the description of my find, I want to let you know that I am very new to this. I recently became interested in active mushrooms, and have spent a lot of time on this website, and at the local library gathering ID information, pictures, ect. Once I had a decent understanding of what to look for, and what to be weary of, I went out and started hunting. Yesterday, on my third time out, I found a small patch of the below mushrooms.

My Questions are:

1) What are these? I believe them to be P. Cyanescens.

2) Because I am so new to this, and everyone says not to eat anything unless you are 100% sure, and have an expert check them over, I am very nervous about eating them. Are there any other ways I can check to make sure they are not poisonous?

3)I have read that you should try eating a very small amount, and wait a whole digestive cycle so that if they are poisonous, you will know, but it wont kill you. Do you recommend this? And can someone help clarify what would count as a "little"?

4) Please let me know how I did with the pictures and description. I would appreciate feedback, as I'm still learning the lingo.

We'll start with some pics:

Caps: 1.5-4cm wide. Varying from applanate, plano-convex and convex, the more mature ones being wavy. Striate. Wet-ish to the touch. For colour, most were sort of a brown, but the more mature ones, and the ones that have been drying and turning more light tan.

Gills: Looks to be Adnate to Sinuate. They were a light brown color fresh, and as they are drying the seem to be darkening up.

Stipe: 2.5-6cm in length. A mixture of white, and sort of woody brown. Hallow on some, not on others.

Veil: No visible veil.

Spore Print: It looks like blackish grey. I want to say its slightly purple, but I think I may have some bias.

Habit: Seattle, in a city park, in some landscaping that was a woody debris area, under a small tree/bush. On the ground, growing up between fallen leaves. There was a small patch, and a few other varieties mixed in near by.

Very healthy looking P. cyanescns!!!

I'm not a trusted identifier but I have experience with those little fuckers.  Don't weigh them.  Unless you want to.  I like eating  a mix of both fresh and dry.  Gives different levels but I'm a weirdo and have no proof.

Anyway wait for a trusted identifier to confirm since I'm just some random person.

Eat two dry grams for a great time.  Or eat them as you feel you should lol.... Eat 1-5 wait see how things are going after 20 minutes then eat more and more depending on how you are feeling about things.

Ahh confirmed by others while I typed this out.

Definatley try a couple fresh.  Even just one to get the feel is never regrettable.

Soaking them in lemon juice and adding that mix to a nicely brewed tea sugar fruit mix is nice.

Hi. Excellent identification request.

All of the mushrooms harvested and photographed are indeed Psilocybe cyanescens.

No one can tell you how you will react to this collection of mushrooms. If you are nervous, you can dry them and save them in a sealed container for later. They are not poisonous. They are Psilocybe cyanescens, a psychedelic mushroom that is very well documented.

Google HPLC/GC for more scientific testing methods.

This is a good idea if you're dealing with some species. Your collection will not kill you. Your collection does not require this. A "little" would be a couple of nibbles to one pileus.

This is an excellent observation. You took photographs, including in situ and post-harvest photographs.

You captured the bluing on the margins of the caps and along the stipes. You even took a spore print and demonstrated the color, which is very helpful in identification.

You are good to go, man!

Having just picked and eaten some of my own, congrats on the cyanescens.

Very nice looking ones at that.
