Possible Edible?
    #21011945 - 12/22/14 12:00 PM (9 years, 4 months ago)

Species: Unsure, looks an awful lot like store-bought portabella, or deer mushroom.

Habitat: Dense leaf/mulch mix under heavy hedges, mixed with ivy.

Gills: Dark brown, firm, emarginate/free

Stem: Thick, fibrous. Veil visible on younger caps.

Cap: Brown to tan, dry and slightly scaly.

Bruising: None

Spore Print: Brown/Rusty

General location: Very damp and shaded patch under hardwood hedges

You've got an Agaricus sp.

Any noticeable smell or bruising?

That spore print color is more chocolate brown, rusty brown is a more orange brown.

Thanks for the replies!

Yes, spore print is definitely chocolate, not rust brown.

Smell is similar to a store-bought portabello but a bit richer and sharper, kind of piss-like, as weird as that sounds.

Within Agaricus, are there any species that are harmful that this could be confused with?

Any TI have insight into the exact species? There is about 10+ lbs of this waiting in the spot, would love to fill the dehydrator with something tasty!

I think that Agaricus tend to smell somewhat like piss when they start to age

Ha yeah it is a strange odor, but not bad.

The younger ones that I just took out of the fridge and cracked in half are beginning to show slight pinkish bruising, especially where the stem and cap meet.

Maybe this will help narrow it down?

I certainly know by the smell when those buttons hiding in the fridge are overdue.

I wouldn't exactly call it 'piss' but it certainly is an odor of decay.

I don't hunt for Agaricus that much myself, but I tend to like'em young - just as they start to reveal their hymenium.

:pedobear:
