Bottom casing layer and other casing Q...
    #2098933 - 11/12/03 08:30 PM (20 years, 3 months ago)

What is the general opinion on using a bottom casing layer around here? Is it worth it, or should I just simply put the substrate on the bottom of the sterilized baking tray and cover with casing mixture?

Finally, is it necessary to sterilize the vermiculite and coco coir used in the 60/40 verm/coco tek http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/23536 beforehand by boiling, or is the microwave method listed enough?

Thanks alot for the help.

Not necessary under most circumstances, IMO.

A microwave works well. Get the mixture wet, cover and nuke for 5 minutes. Stir the mixture and then nuke another 5 minutes.

i just fill my casings with moist casing mix and put in the oven covered in foil at 350 for like 1.25 hours then case with it, sterilizing the pan and the mix at the same time, i think. leaving a bottom layer and ive had good results, does anyone know if this sterilization method is considered sufficient?

Sounds like a good idea supra. I would like to hear from others on that.

I think you will find that the general opinion is that it is unnecessary, but it really has no disadvantages and can only help. In other words - you can go without one, but adding it has the possibility of adding extra water without any drawbacks (if everything is prepared correctly).

I have used one before, and probably will again in the future if I ever use a strait grain substrate again. IMO, strait vermiculite is best because it is easier to water because it doesn?t get as heavily colonized as coir. It probably wouldn?t hurt to buffer it up a bit higher, as most of the waste will accumulate at the bottom of the casing.

If you ARE going to use a bottom casing layer of straight verm, is it still acceptable to use a 60/40 verm coco mix as the top casing layer?

Absolutly. Bottom and top case can be different materials, but why prepare 2 different casing materials? I would use both layers the same.
