Another dumb post
    #2101037 - 11/13/03 11:47 AM (13 years, 26 days ago)

So, I am using the PF tek on ? pint jars, and when I mix the BRF and the vermiculite, I fill the jar up to the first line. (The first line is the glass groove where you screw the jar lid on.) Then I add my dry verm on top, screw the lids on, foil them and PC them for 45 ? 60 min. When I take the jars out of the PC what I am noticing is that some of them, toward the top of the jar have what looks like grey mud. What would be causing this?
This happens to me on every grow and it is an annoyance because the mycelium grows slower around this grey area. How would I prevent this?

Also, one of my grey sludge jars was ready to be birthed the other day and when I took the lid off, mycelium had grown up and out of the dry verm layer. This, I am assuming is a bad thing; what would cause this? Is it sludge related?

Thanks!

you could be overfilling your jars. try leaving a small gap between the top verm layer and the jar lid.

what's your ratio? 60 minutes in the pc seems like a long time for BRF.

What is in my jars:

6 cups verm
3 cups BRF
3 cups water

I mix it all up, fill the jars and throw out the excess. Could overcooking be the problem?

this is pure specualtion and a mega guess..

what if the water content was too high, or water got in them, and they boiled a bit in the PC, then a lot of brf made its way to the top and settled?

You know...now that you mention this, the only jars that seem to do this are the ones at the very bottom of the pressure cooker. I'll bet water is getting in and some how uber-cooking the BRF. I'll attempt to seal the jars better. Matter solved (I hope) thanks everyone!

Don't worry about over heating the substrate with pf tek.

the ones at the bottom of the pot are getting more water in them. it isn't overcooking the brf, just over wetting it. try using a little less water in the pc, unless the water is really low when you remove the lid. dont want a dry pc for sure!

The "mud" is caused by inefficient mixing of your brf.
When you mix up,add the water to the verm AND then add your brf,a little at a time.
You'll find that the brf coats the verm instead of forming small gluggy masses within the verm, which causes the "mud" that you are talking about.
hope that helps
