Mrbarts easy no pour agar
    #21008861 - 12/21/14 06:30 PM (9 years, 4 months ago)

Now im going to start off by saying this is how i get shit done when making agar . This tek will you a nice nutritious firm agar dish .

>To start off you need wide mouth half pints.
The 1/2 pint elites work great too. Use the plastic lids as well makes it mush easier when doing agar work .

>Now you will need two things .

>Agar which can be bought online or at stores. Mexican , health and oriental stores seem to carry agar .
When buying agar get the agar with no sugar .

There are many agar recipes but im doing a potato dextrose agar .
which will need to include Idahoan potato flakes .

(optionally yeast can be added to the mix)

>To prepair the mix you want

6 grams potato flakes.

9 grams agar powder

1 gram yeast (optionally)

>Mix your dry ingredients into a small pan and add 500ml cold water and mix well.

>Now put the mix on the stove and bring it to a boil while stiring constantly .
now add 4 teaspoons (10ml) of light karo syrup or honey.

Let it boil for a few minutes then take it off the stove and let it cool for a minute.  it should be thinker than it was . More of a gloopy consistency

>take the mix and fill your jars about a quarter inch full

>Once filled screw the lids on and put in pc and cook at 15psi for 35 mins .

>Once down turn the stove off and let pc cool overnite .

You are now ready to begin your career as a mad scientist

Thinking about this further. Shouldn't there be a vent hole in the lid to prevent boil over of the agar, and allow built-up pressure to escape while in the pressure cooker?

Edit: Not to mention that the mycelium needs the gas exchange while growing as well, wouldn't it stall out using a sealed lid?

Isn't it hard to see growth with those lids on there?  You have to watch growth from the sides yes?  I'm having a hard time figuring out how you're preventing boil over as well.  You don't cover how you're stacking the jars inside the PC or how much water you're putting in there.

There's a reason why if you're sterilizing a whiskey bottle/flask of agar, you fill the water quite high to prevent boil over.  Maybe you could shed some light on this.  I really hate pouring agar but I do it weekly.  I'm :takingnotes:

Bringing the pressure up very slowly is the best way to mitigate boil over with no pour agar.

Ya I know that, you also  want to bring it down slowly.  I guess I'm just going to have to experiment.

If the top is screwed all the way on it won't boil over but don't you run the risk of it breaking?  Otherwise what's the point of having a gas exchange on your whiskey bottle?  Even MudaFuka leaves his jar unscrewed slightly when sterilizing his liquid inoculant jars in the PC.

If they aren't "that air tight" then aren't you inviting contams?

I'm not talking abut seeing through the agar.. im talking about seeing through the top of the jar to watch the myc grow and spot satelites.  You have to look through the side of those jars to visually spot the top of the agar media.

A grain jar lid would also work. I actually use those jars with some agar in them to test my grain jar lids and make sure they are up to snuff

While I find the fancy jelly jars a bit heavy and harder to see through fact is that they will work fine for agar. ProfessorPinhead also has a no pour tek that calls for them. Good writeup OP :super:

I do this same tek but with silicone injection ports and a silicone tyvek filter. Always has worked fine for me with no boil over. I raise my jars up a bit by using some jars with water in them and make a triangle or a square with them and set the riser plate that would normally be on the bottom of the pc ontop of the jars.

We need to start a "GoFundMe" campaign to create see-thru mason jar lids.

I made some plates in half pint PF jars with grain jar lids yesterday. Eventually I'm gonna have to get into pour agar. It just seems like it would be a real pain to pour plates inside a SAB.
