Bacteria? Or too compact, too dry?
    #20997654 - 12/19/14 04:53 AM (9 years, 4 months ago)

First time grow.
I ordered a kit, I now know this was a waste of money.  It came with 12 presterilized BRF jars. Followed the Tek(SAB , gloves mask, flame, shower, etc.)
This is a little more than 5 weeks since inoculation. All the jars look about the same.

The picture makes the uncolonized part look wet, but to the naked eye it looks very dry.
I have been assuming this is bacteria. But I have only my readings to assume so.  Could it just be too compact or dry?

Thank you for helping out the newb.

all of the jars abruptly stop colonizing around the same area? that is strange but i would think that a lack of moisture would not be the case... probly some sort of bacteria imo id like to see some other experienced opinions tho

If it looks dry then just be patient. The last quarter is always the hardest. Also, using those big jars is known to have this problem. 5 weeks colonization time isn't unheard of for those jars.

Did all five inoculation holes show growth?
What are your temps?

Flipping your jars is also not recommended. Kits are also not recommended. I bought five premade jars to start:

Now I use those jars for Liquid Cultures so it wasn't a complete loss.

I got the right jars for future experiments. The pictures of the kit showed the wide mouth jars, but these are what I got.
I made a lot of mistakes and first week was in the kit's incubator at 85 degrees. I also handled them a lot. Now on a shelf at 72. There were 3 holes near the center of each lid. 1.5 inch needle would not reach glass. I am not sure about germination spots.
After reading a lot on contaminants I was sure these were a loss but did not toss them just flipped them and left them alone on the shelf. They did looked wet around 3 weeks. But now look like this.
I will be trying LC in these jars myself. I also will be trying agar in another few weeks.

Give it another week.

Use a sharpie to draw lines where your myc stops. Check it in a week and see the progress. If it's little to none I'd toss.
