Looking to get a new car
    #20997371 - 12/19/14 01:57 AM (9 years, 4 months ago)

And I want a manual. I can make them go, but I can't really drive them smoothly. I also don't know what I'm looking for when giving one a test drive. I'd rather not get the only person I know who could assess the condition of a manual. I really just wanna do it on my own.

Is this possible to do? Are they going to let me test drive it when I don't have it down to a second nature? I mean on my bike I did, but a bike and a car are completely different.

I have driven 4 manuals in my life (minus my bike) and all for less than 10 minutes and never above second gear. One of them I couldn't even drive because you had to pop the clutch in it to get it to go, anything less it would stall and die. I've driven the other end of the spectrum in a 2000's high performance Camaro and a 2010's Camaro. The last was a V10 Dodge Dually where you didn't have to use the gas at all when letting out the clutch. It just went.

I want a manual because I like being involved in the driving more than just pushing 2 pedals. I like driving and want it to be a fun experience, and shifting gears makes it so (for me at least). My current car has a psuedo manual option but there's never any clutch involved, all it really does is increase shifting time over the manual. Because the machine does it so much faster and 'on point' than I could. It's basically just an automatic where you tell it what gear you want it in.

I dunno where I'm going to buy it yet.. But yeah I plan to buy a car in cash. Mostly been looking at craigslist (don't have the money yet, it's coming) plan to go around and see what's for sale locally once I have it.

I just need to know if I can reasonably detect any problems when I can't exactly drive it like it's meant to be driven.. I tend to sit heavy on the clutch and rev the engine instead of switching gears because I'm not used to it. My bike was easy, lol.. Fucking floor it and just pound through the gears until I reached target speed. Cars are meant to be driven with a little more finesse than that.

I don't know how to tell if something is shifting smoothly or whatnot.

Basically is this something I need to bring in more of an expert on. I've bought plenty of cars and learned plenty of lessons. I think I'm capable of spotting a lemon. The only thing I have an issue with is the manual transmission because I have almost no experience with them.

I don't want to buy a car that is going to have a transmission explode a week after having it.

If you don't know much about cars, you aren't going to really know what to look for to be able to detect any problems. And modern cars are mostly run on computers. You need to have an actual mechanic or someone very knowledgeable on cars to check it out with you, or even hook up a computer to it and run some scans/logs. Most important when buying a used car, is did the previous owner take meticulous care of it? Did they get regular maintenance and never neglect it? Do you live in an area that gets snow/salt on the roads? Check the undercarriage for rust. Rust is very bad.

Modern clutches are very robust and forgiving, it's very hard to break them just by learning. But you can damage them.. Heavy abuse over time definitely will.
If you aren't experienced with driving a manual, I'd suggest learn a little bit before diving into a new car with one.. it's not that hard.. but if you know how to shift into first and second smoothly, you can shift into the other gears too. But learning to drive manual fluidly just takes experience. Knowing the right times to upshift (before redline..), when to downshift vs brake when slowing down or taking a corner, many other little techniques you can pick up.

Every manual car has a slightly different pedal/clutch feel. You just have to learn the feel of the car.

Shit. It's been a while since I drive a stick. I haven't drove one since I got my ankle fused 10 year ago. When you need to get somewhere, you'll get the shifting down to get where you need to go. For a noob buying a manual transmission, test drive a few new cars at the dealer. The clutches on new cars are tight and will help you get the feel of what a clutch is supposed to feel like.

When I was 20 I bought a 72 VW beetle. It was my first stick shift car. I did not know how to drive it. I jumped in that thing and went around the block a few times, semi got the hang of it, then got on the interstate highway. I was good on the highway until I had to exit. I got that thing home. Weird. When I needed weed, I sure did get that sumbitch on the road and shifting like a champ.

Look out for Loose clutches. If the clutch doesn't catch the gear as soon as you begin to raise your foot, it's loose, or worn. Someone in here will chime in after me and say I'm all wrong and be the expert. Im looking for a new car right now. I have a Dodge Challenger and am tired of getting gas raped. I'm looking at VW jettas and passats. I may get a manual but they are hard to drive with girl shoes.
