can you resterilize rye substrate?
    #20993051 - 12/18/14 07:51 AM (9 years, 3 months ago)

I have alot of rye substrate that I purchased and inoculated a few weeks ago and have seen no growth, I have some agar and trying to grow some mycelium on it to promote growth. Can I and should I resterilize the rye I had? I dont have pics but from what I can see none of the rye shows any signs of contamination with either mold or bacteria.

If it didn't work the first time why try again with the same grain. You probably did something wrong and a fresh start will be useful.

Problem is I don't have alot of access to grain and have to order more.... I had to buy it online since the local health foods store didn't have it. So its a little pricey.

I have like 70 bags of premade rye substrate from a vender that I'd be more than a little pissed to get rid of you know?

Sure you can sterilize it, you can sterilize just about anything. If it was worthless to begin with, sterilizing isn't going to do much good though.

You keep saying substrate,  is this rye grain or a substrate?
If it is grain then resterilizing isn't recommended because it doesn't hold up well to a second PC run.  Most of the time you will end up with dry or overcooked exploded rye that turns to mush.  But I see no reason not to try if is all you can get.  But I would recommend buying some wild bird seed.

I prefer bird seed after years of bird seed and years of rye, bird seed won in my book.

I would sterilize it again and try with new syringe, new spores.

Seeing no growth either means your syringe was bunk, or your procedures were bunk and some invisible contam like bacteria won the fight, and what looks like no growth, is bacteria eating things up.

clean up your processes, make sure your syringe is from someone reputable, try again.

I've sterilized rye grain jars twice and they've grown just fine.

You have a bunch of other grains you can use. Even a supermarket will sell wild bird seed which you can use just fine. I've used rye, wheat, barley and wild bird seed. I had success with all of them.
