My own modest Google proxy * 5
    #12546668 - 05/12/10 12:53 AM (13 years, 8 months ago)

Some people are a little sketched out about all the information Google collects, so they use alternatives like Scroogle, Ixquick or DuckDuckGo. Today Scroogle was down for a while; they're back up now, but I made my own alternative while I was waiting. So if you want to search Google without leaving any identifiable information on their servers, you can now use my own SSoogle as well. It has its own pros and cons versus the other search engines I listed above, so try them all and see what you like. What sets mine apart is that it uses Google's public API, so it's less likely to break in the future. The cons are that it's slower, and limited to 64 results. But I still think it could be useful for the occasional sensitive query. Anyway, just wanted to share in case anyone finds it useful.

Any chance this is an open source project? I'd love to take a peek at what you did. A very cool project. +5 to you for that!

Certainly, I'm flattered that you're even interested. Just be warned, it's a very simple script that's not really a good example for a large project. I wasn't really expecting it to get much use, or require many changes. Mostly I was just stoned and fucking around.

I always do my best coding/scripting high. Stoners make the best programmers, mannnn. :bigjoint:

Very nice script though. Super clean and straight to the point. I'll post again if I figure out anything cool while tinkering.

I did comp sci at University for a year-and-a-half, but got so depressed by my surroundings I had to drop out and go to art school. I hated all the antisocial nerds and people who hated on pot.

Thanks for providing the DL link!

Is it possible to do something similar on these forums?  What if you had some photos to post but didn't want to have logged visits or posts that reveal your IP address and other details?

Just a quick update: I've modified this script to load results simultaneously when possible, instead of one after another. It now performs a maximum of two batched requests, instead of up to nine individual requests. In practice it should take 2x - 3x less time to complete searches with lots of results. Still not as fast as Google, but hopefully more usable than it was before.

It's been working just fine for me bro.
Do I need to download that file or what?

You only have to download the file if you want to inspect the source or run it on your own server. Otherwise you can continue to use http://www.shroomery.org/ssoogle/ and it will always have the latest updates.

I use it when I feel the need. And I came across something when I click on certain links. Links with a question mark in them when I click on them don't go to the link.

For example:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1081992
This link under the good search when I click on it will turn to...
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php%3Ft%3D1081992

So ?=% for some reason.

Not a big problem. Just letting you know.

My search on ssgoogle is "ubuntu reading .dat files"

and its the second result that shows up.

I tried it because it sounded cool, seems I got the same issue.
