Going to the store this weekend.
    #2099094 - 11/12/03 11:17 PM (13 years, 24 days ago)

Alright, my friend ordered his spores, and they should arrive sometime early next week. We're gonna be going store, as stated, and we're gonna be gettin some supplies for the grow. Please check over our list and see if we'll need anything else.

1. Vermicule $5
2. Pearlite $5
3. Brown Rice Flour $5
4. A humidifier(http://www.petco.com/product_info.asp?sku=7926290026&dept_id=%2D2) $19.99
5. Thermomiter w/ Humidity Gauge $5.00-10.00
6. 1/2 Pint jars $10

Sorry for the spelling, I'm too lazy took any of those words up. Also, we already have a 10 gallon fish tank thats never been used which will be where I put all this stuff. We have one question too. With the humidifier mentioned, and the pearlite, is there a chance of over-humidifing? I doubted it but I thought I might check first.

Oh yeah, I also put prices next to all the stuff. Please check them, if you've purchased any of the items, and tell me how close I am. We're on a tight budget: (

something for a fruiting chamber (rubbermaid), and incubator (possibly). A hygrometer will be more than $10 but with perlite and a humidifier you should be pretty sure your humidity is high enough.

johnbat: list looks good and I agree that you may need some sort of incubation method. my bud's "incubator" consists of a small rubbermaid, couple of bath towels and a heating pad which he rarely has to use - around 84F-86F consistently. BUT what about for sterilization(PC) and general cleanliness? (latex gloves @$5, lysol, bleach, alcohol) may have this around your place already. good luck and enjoy!

when dealing with cakes and on a budget i see no need for the humidifier at all. the perlite shall do the job just fine. the money would be better spent on a pressure cooker.

Sounds good man, good luck to your friend i hope he enjoys the new hobby. I think the most important part of growing shrooms is understanding their value. If he reads a lot on the shroomery he should do just fine, this place has so much good help and information. Peace!

Hey, thanks guys. As for the pressure cooker, and cleanlyness supplies, my friend is a neat freak so he already has most of what we'll need, and we're gonna borrow a pressure cooker from a good friend who will be helping us with the process. One thing though, where can we get latex gloves? I checked with him, and he doesnt have any.

any general store should have latex. Wal-Mart or any other place with a drug store on the premises. hell, even some of those plastic food service gloves would suffice.

oh, one thing about the gloves is that my bud finds it tough to inoc. with both hands in gloves. see the tape, he says, sticks to the latex *really* well. so he only uses one glove on the syring holding hand. Michael Jackson style! he hasn't found a better way yet.

cool, i wasnt sure if you had to goto a medical supply store or anything like that. I have a few more questions too, hehe. Firstly, I went and pulled my 10 gallon tank out of the attic. I thought it was unused, but it seems to have been used to store a hamster several years ago. I checked it for leaks, and it's fine, I also cleaned it with bleach, and some other cleaning products I found... I can still use it right? Also, how many half pint cakes can I fit in a 10 gallon tank?

thanks, john

Sure can. Hard to say, try putting in the glass jars in place of cakes the get an idea.

Alright, sorry to be posting so many questions, but im doing it as I learn. For my incubator, can I just put the jar in my 10 g tank, and put a heating pad under it? I have a reptile heating pad thats made for a ten gallon tank.

It may dry your susbtrate out. Can you just go with a submergible fish tank heater?

Yeah - I would go with a standard double rubbermaid incubator. You can set it up in just a few minutes and it should only set you back $30 at most.

Also - just so you know fruiting on perlite is a pain in the ass. Perlite makes a huge freakin mess and you have to make sure to fan every few hours. Now, don't get me wrong, it worked fine for me - but I'm much, much more happy with my PMP setup that I never have to mess with.
