white fuzzy stuff on mushrooms???? contam???
    #20989817 - 12/17/14 02:52 PM (9 years, 4 months ago)

I put my first jar in yesterday because it had started pinning, the next day(today) I noticed white fuzz had grown on my mushrooms, is there anyway to remove it, it looks extremely wierd????? I've checked previous posts but none of them say if you can actually remove it?

Its mycelium. Part of the mushroom. It indicates that you CO2 concentration is too high. Increase your Fresh Air Exchange.

Fan more.

By fanning more will the mycelium growing on the mushrooms go away?

No. It doesn't need to go away. Its the same stuff that the mushroom is made of. Its not a contaminant. All it is, is an indication of less than ideal growing environment. If you up the FAE your next flush shouldn't get the "fuzzy feet".

Do you have 1/4"holes spaced evry 2" in a grid pattern on all 6 sides of that tub?

Basically you are losing potency by not fanning enough... A more verse zoomer can probably tell you the exact amount it degrades.

Fan 3-5 per day and, as stated above, a properly constructed growing chamber and you're golden :mushroom2:

I have 1/4 holes two inches apart on each side except the bottom, I only have 4 holes there, would turning on the ceiling fan work to promote fae?

It could also stir up contaminants in the room...but maybe the cake can handle it at this point, especially if the air is relatively clean.

I'd just keep fanning whenever you mist

No. Invitro fruits are regularly grown in high CO2 environments. I've never noticed any degradation of actives in any project that was due to anything other than genetics.

Eight there is probably your issue. As your moisture evaporates off the perlite, where will the replacement air come from? The principle of how a SGFC works is dependent on a natural air flow, and evaporating moisture. I don't think a fan will make the difference you're looking for.

When you dunk your cakes for the next flush, I would take the opportunity to put the holes in the bottom of your tub. Also make sure that you raise it off of whatever it is sitting on, so that air can circulate through the bottom.

It won't matter. A fully colonised substrate is pretty resistant to contamination. Contam precautions are an issue during colonization, but after that...not so much.

I always thought not fanning them, letting them get fuzzy, degrades the potency. Best possible environment nets you the best possible potency I though ?

I always forgot to raise the bottom chamber (use to stack them)off the ground... What do you suggest, just a couple inches. Or could someone get away with using mason jar lids (rings)only ?

Just a few inches works fine. Rings probably atent enough though. 4 half pint jars would do the trick though.

Damn, thought i had found a use for all my extra rings lol

Thanks for the tip, mason jars it is

Oh, one more question... I lose a ton of perlite though all those holes, going to start putting a layer of cheesecloth down.

Yay or nay ?

Nay.

It will stack and bind on itself. Let it fall out. Next time if you can get the coarse perlite, that's the best.

Hahaha.

The perlite is a mineral. It doesn't go bad. Between grows you can bake it for an hour or so and its good as new.

Just got fed up rinsing it out... Way to messy. I didn't want any contams hiding in the plant matter.
I knew it is a mineral and doesn't go bad... Now i know a hour on bake is good to go

I was good thing i asked before i went out and bought a bale of it lmao
Thank you

Yeah as far as I know the amount of fresh air exchange has no effect on potency. A lack of fresh air will cause them grow oddly (long stems, small caps, fuzzy stems) and in serious cases lower yields.

Just make sure if any organic material falls in it you scoop it out. Don't let it get mixed up in the perlite or you'll never get it all out. I've been using the same perlite for years. The only time I even bother disinfecting it with heat is if one of the substrates in it has been contaminated with mold.
