I just finished "Breaking Open the Head" by daniel pinchbeck and I would recommend it. its not too long and is broken down into a bunch of small chapters so I found it easy to pick up and read a chapter or two even with little time on my hands.

I cannot fucking stand Daniel Bitchprick. Talk about psychedelic elitism..

He thinks hes on the level of the giants like hancock McKenna leary..etc.

Hes such a goddamn hippy, too.

I have read the main McKenna books and my favorite is The Archaic Revival. Food of the Gods comes in 2nd.

Another favorite is "And the truth shall set you free" by David Icke.

That's upsetting. In his video about the book he only mentioned ever going to Australia. Whereas I'm pretty sure McKenna traveled all over the fucking world exploring psychedelics and wrote books on cultivation in a time where it was not done indoors by the layperson. Just wow.

What does that have to do with my description of Daniel Bitchprick?

How about LSD: My Problem Child by Albert Hoffman?

Or any book by Carlos Castaneda. Some say the stories are fiction, but damn they sound like real peyote sessions. Worth the read.

"Ayahausca In My Blood". That book, is SO effing good. He like talks about how he rides this snake over a desert I think, and it eventually takes him to his girlfriends house (in his trip ofcourse). An amazing book with a compilation of trip stories.

"DMT: The Spirit Molecule" is a good book as well. If I remember correctly, the guy works for some lab or university, where he gets to intravenously inject DMT into people and records his findings. I read it a long time ago, but it was VERY fun. Especially since it was before I got into psychedelics.

I was just "psychedelic curious" back then! HAHA! Man, those books really don't prepare you for what you really see though. Or maybe I just still underestimated the drugs.

What aspect of "the subject" are you interested in?

The pharmacology? (TiHKAL and PiHKAL)
The shamanistic? (Shamanism and Hallucinogens and Shamanism)
The science? (New Science of Psychedelics)
General info? (Psychedelic Explorer's Guide and Krishna in the Sky With Diamonds)
Anthropological / History? (Entheogens and the Development of Culture)
Terence McKenna awesomeness? (Archaic Revival or True Hallucinations or Food of the Gods)
Specific psychedelics? (Sacred Mushroom of Visions:Teonanacatl or Tryptamine Palace or LSD: Spirituality and the Creative Process or Sacred Vine of Spirits: Ayahuasca)

And these are just a few of the books on my shelf which are by no means the only books you should look into for each subject. They're just the ones I happened to chose to give you links for. There are hundreds more that are worth reading. You just have to figure out what aspect of the psychedelic experience you're wanting information on.

In that case I would highly recommend Sacred Mushroom of Visions:Teonanacatl. Really good book that covers pretty much all aspects of mushrooms: history, shamanic use, pharmacology, etc.

And crap I missed one: Psychedelia: An Ancient Culture, A Modern Way of Life I haven't read this one yet; it constantly taunts me from the bookshelf. It does look to be amazing though. I might have to move it to the top of the list to read next.

Wasson's Soma: Divine Mushroom of Immortality is pretty interesting from ethno/history/anthro/myco standpoint then.

For the history / anthropological angle there's a good book called Shroom: A Cultural History of the Magic Mushroom by Andy Letcher. A "used" copy isn't very expensive.

There's some good general history of how mushrooms went from ceremonial use in Mexico to widespread recreational use today, and how people like Wasson, McKenna and Leary fit into the picture. It's not written by the "true believer" type of psychedelic guru so it has a slightly more sceptical tone than some of the other books mentioned, but for history / anthropology it has a good general overview.

--

That book by Daniel Pinchbeck (Breaking Open the Head) is a good read - I can understand the negative comments about psychedelic elitism e.t.c but it's an enjoyable read all the same. The interesting thing is that he embarks on this psychedelic odyssey in the manner of a bored, cynical journalist seeking a good "hook" for a book, but then gradually gets converted into a true believer talking about plant spirits and so on. You start to wonder if he's become slightly unhinged by all the drugs.

I wrote that, but I meant something else

Hey all, it was leaked that I'm getting an amazon giftcard this chirstmas, so I was thinking I would get some books. I'm not a big reader but I do read from time to time. So for that reason I'm not really interested in incredibly lengthy books, unless they're very captivating. I've already added The Doors of Perception by Aldous Huxley to my cart. Is there anything that I simply have to read on this subject? I'm a fan of the talks of Terrence McKenna and Graham Hancock but haven't read any of their books.

If you like Terrance I would recommend either "Food Of The Gods" or "True Hallucinations." (I preferred Food Of The Gods personally.)

FOTG is a sort of commentary on the history of psychoactive use throughout the world, but it is also full of his opinions on the drug policy and how he thinks it should be.  TH is more of a memoir of a trip that he took to the amazon, and what happened there (as well as other stories/anecdotes.)

Both good reads, I own 'em both. :psychsplit:

I'd suggest reading Dale Pendell's Pharmako series, great lot of books with a very tongue in cheek poetic writing style. I have tried reading mckenna myself but find him to be too "out there" for my liking, some of his theories are pretty cool aswell as his contributions to the world of ethnobotany. Pendell on the other hand feels like more of an artist just going through the motions of life, sharing his experiences aswell as information his has gathered over the years about different entheogenic plants and drug's.

His book's are not exclusively about Psychedelics though and goes into various plant based inebriants/intoxicant's, my favourite of his Pharmako series is Pharmako/Gnosis: Plant Teacher's and The Poison Path
