Congrats on your flush! Get some more FAE in there, your shrooms are choking.

I was thinking about doing something similar but it is a lot of effort really.
Easier ways to get it done IMO. If you keep getting contams then rather look at improving the way you are doing things rather than just trying to get the myc to colonize faster to beat the contams. If there are contams present, there will always be contams there - perhaps not "active" though. That is the way I see it.
If I were you I would rather PC the grater and then grate it inside of the SAB. I think it is best practice to always try and minimize the chance for contams to end up in your work.
Your method is working for you now, although I think perhaps try and improve a few things you do when working with grains and such to try and avoid contams altogether. Will certainly help you in the long run, agar is pretty cool. Get going with that - it makes things easier and gives you more confidence when inoculating jars.
Still perhaps it is a decent tek for beginners who might still be learning to keep contams down and want to try spawn to bulk. -shrugs-

I like what you've done here ...Might be a nice way for me to start with my grains. Along with some LC to try out.
I do agree with these guys, I would try to keep it as clean as possible. (PC the grater, and do in the SAB) Although I think my first try I will go with a haeavy spawn ratio Like you. Ive yet to birth my first cake so listen to those guys first

Thanks, im gonna follow your advices. And yeah, quite a lot of work with this tek, so I hope I can switch to agar soon. About contams: maybe I was a little misunderstood, I dont get any contams with this tek, just when I used to inoculate grains with MS syringe - bacteria and trichoderma were often my guest. But if I do everyhting in a SAB I can work with lower ratios and make more jars from one pfcake.

You ideally shouldn't be getting contams, either you did not sterilize the jars properly, the syringe is contaminated or while working with everything some contaminations were introduced to your jars.
Unless the syringe is contaminated, there is improvement to be made if all of your jars ended up contaminated Unlikely that your syringe is contaminated as your BRF cakes end up fine - unless you have used different syringes for the grains.
Agar is a great way to make sure that your inoculant is contam free - grow it out, transfer from the edge to a new dish until you are satisfied really and then drop that into your grain jars.
That way you know that chances are it is either the sterilization process which needs improvement and/or your SAB work if you get contams.
Right now what you are doing is basically just hoping that the mycelium colonizes the substrate before any contams which may be present in the substrate start to become "active". Sure it works, although isn't ideal IMO.
I am pretty new to this, although that is how I see it.

I get it now. My syringes are clean so I think the problem is the sterilization process or the SAB.
-> SAB: I clean it with antibacterial soap + water (idea from RR) and clean the jars/syringes/anything with ethyl-alcohol before I put them in, and once again when they are in the SAB. And I use medical gloves everytime. -> PC: I use an old PC that doesnt have any measuring stuff on it.
So its more like the PC than the SAB... but who knows.

Nice. Those mushrooms would have kept growing quite a bit, why did you harvest so early?

Usually Im patient and wait enough, but we are going to a party on saturday --- Anyway, should I keep the trashbag liner on the surface? And I skip dunking instead of heavy misting.

I bet he did not want to spread spores to those little buddys, however I think it was a little bit early harvest. It also happened to me once that my pinset was quite good but since I did not picked the bigger fruits the smaller ones did not want to get mature. Nice job bro!

Hi everyone, I harvested the rest of the first flush yesterday, and there were still a lot of mushies that I harvested today. After the second harvest, the substrate is broken, but I think its not a big deal, now I have more pinning surface.
Harvest #1: 170g Harvest #2: 320g Harvest #3: 260g
So the overall first flush weight is 750 g !!! And I use only 3 PF cakes for that project. I've never had overall monotub yields like that, and this was just one big flush. So again, thanks for shroomery, thanks for everyone!
and some pictures of course

I put the second monotub into fruiting conditions. Now changed the way I use polyfil, hope it helps to increase FAE. I'll update when pins arrive.
Tomorrow Im going to remove the trashbagliner from the first monotub, then dunk.

You really have to be careful where your hands are positioned. Especially if you're not working in a flow hood... but the technique should be applied everywhere
